18yo Girl Escapes Kidnapping Gang, Sounds the Alarm

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: A 18-year-old girl, S** Navin, a student grade 12 at Toul Ampil high school, was reportedly kidnapped by a gang who took her away in a car and locked her in a house with some other young girls.

According to the victim's parents, on August 3, 2018, at 3 pm, the victim rode off on her motorbike to study. They didn't see or hear from her again until August 4 at 11 am, when they received a brief call from their daughter asking for help before hanging up. After that, they weren't able to contact her again, so they filed a complaint with police.

On August 5 at 6 pm, the victim's mother received a call from her daughter saying that she was at the police station. When she went to pick up her daughter, she found her very weak and unable to talk.

The victim said anonymous people took her in a car and shut her up with 10 other girls in an unknown house. The victim managed to escape from the house and went to ask the neighbors for help.

The police are investigating in order to rescue the other 10 girls who have been kidnapped, and there is a manhunt on for the kidnappers.

Police question kidnapping scenario

Police in Phnom Penh are attempting to unravel a puzzling kidnapping case allegedly involving Chinese nationals and the trafficking of teenage girls subdued by drugs.

On Monday, Sum Vathana told local media that his daughter had just returned home after being kidnapped and held hostage for three days.

He claimed that she was taken by Chinese nationals, drugged and confined with at least ten other victims in Dangkor district.

“The kidnappers were Chinese and the girls were held in a dark place. My daughter managed to escape while they were being transported to a different location,” he said. “They were only given water and drugs.”

“My daughter disappeared for three days and two nights, but she had the will to stay strong and escape,” he said. “When she escaped, she called my phone and I picked her up in Boeng Keng Kang II commune.”

Mr Vathana noted that his daughter had disappeared while on the way to school for extra classes.

Dangkor district police chief Chim Sitha yesterday said outside Mr Vathana’s house that the case is currently being investigated by authorities.

“We are conducting an investigation into whether or not this is true,” Mr Sitha said. “I cannot answer too many questions because we fear that it could impede the investigation and we need to cooperate with the Interior Ministry and the municipal police.”

Mr Sitha could not be reached by phone after addressing the media. However, he was later quoted by local media as saying that Mr Vathana’s story was not true as the victim likely ran away from home.

Prey Sar commune police chief Sum Sary also cast doubt on Mr Vathana’s story yesterday.

Mr Sary said that after deliberating with top officials, police have decided that the kidnapping story is “likely untrue”.

“The father filed a complaint after his daughter was found in Boeng Keng Kang II commune after she had disappeared for three days,” Mr Sary said. “We tried to meet the girl for questioning, but the father would not allow us, saying that she was sent to a hospital.”

“The father said during an interview that his daughter was kidnapped,” he added. “But it is likely not kidnapping, although our officers are still investigating the matter.”

Mr Sary said that in the meeting with top police officials, there were no other reports raised about missing girls.

“We asked all local police whether or not there have been similar complaints filed and each official, even from the provinces, said that no other complaints have been filed over missing girls,” he said.

Quite an ordeal. Sounds like a miraculous escape by a strong young woman. I hope the local cops are up to the task of catching and crushing that gang. Scary stuff.

The house she escaped from wasn’t “unknown” as she went to the neighbours for help. They would have contacted the police. The police would be able to easily investigate this whole thing... even Cambodian police would be able to corroborate her story.

I am going to say something smells fishy and various points don’t seem to add up.

Police dismiss sensational kidnapping

Dangkor district police yesterday said that the story of a young high school student kidnapped by Chinese nationals, drugged and confined in a room with ten others is “pure fiction” strung by the girl to hide the selling of her motorbike from her father.

On Monday, Sum Vathana claimed his 18-year-old daughter Sum Davin had just returned home after being kidnapped and managing to escape.
Police on Tuesday cast doubt on the story and said it was being investigated further.

Nov Tith, head of the Dangkor district serious crime department, said yesterday that investigators questioned the girl at her home in Prey Sar commune and determined the kidnapping story was not true.

He said the girl fabricated the story after she sold her motorbike, disappeared for three days and spent the money.

“The story told by her father is pure fiction,” he said. “The truth is she sold her bike and spent the money. We already confiscated the bike and we are holding it in order to investigate further.”
