Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
According to these recent posts, Mekong water levels are becoming alarmingly high in Kratie province. If you are traveling to Kratie via the Chhlong road, there may be problems with the bridges, but there's no firm information on that at the present time.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 6:19 pm Today's water levels from CEN http://www.cen.com.kh/archives/71405.html
Any updates on the situation are welcome.Vy [National Committee of Disaster Management (NCDM) spokesman Keo Vy] said in Kratie province, once the Mekong River’s water level reaches 20 meters high, it is considered dangerous as it could flood the low land areas. On Thursday, the water level was recorded at 20.16 metres.
If the water level touches 22 meters, he said it is considered alarming for the Mekong River in Kratie Province.

Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
Mekong water level at Pakse (southern Laos) rising rapidly (57 cm in a little over 12 hrs). See graph:
(Source: http://monitoring.mrcmekong.org/station/013901)
Note: the station has not reported 'near real-time' for more than an hour now.
Probably has to do with heavy rains and releasing water from reservoirs in Thailand (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/ ... l/30350968): "Dam boss relaxed about high-water levels"
Quote:
"Water is automatically drained out through the dams’ spillway"
Not to worry, though, as the dam 'boss' said (another quote):
"water drainage for the northeast is still operable, because the Mekong River is still low enough"
Well, maybe in Thailand, but what about further downstreamn?
Oh wait, Thailand doesn't give a shit about its neighbours.

Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
Not going to post a graph again, but Pakse just reported updated info. At 11 PM water level was 11.589 m.
At 9 PM water level was 11.557
Yes, that's more than 3 cm in 2 hrs.
And, it's above the prediction of the Mekong River Commission for tomorrow (which stands at 11.53 and I think is measured at 7AM).
Why am I posting this? Because that higher level is coming down to Stung Treng and further downstream

Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
Forecasting of water levels by Mekong River Commission have to be taken with a grain of salt (they're often not correct), but the fact is that the forecasts for Pakse and Stung Treng have changed drastically compared to yesterday.
They expect Pakse to reach flood stage later today and rising further in the days after to 1.5 meters above flood level.
Stung Treng will reach alarm level tomorrow and levels rising rapidly towards flood level.
Although it is strange that the levels reported in the graphs below are higher than what is reported 'real-time'. Pakse in graph below at 11.95m (supposedly recorded at 7AM), while the real-time figures show 11.72m at 7AM today, and currently 11.865m.

I don't think average Joe appreciates just what this means in terms of water volume.Ashcroftie wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 11:23 pm Not going to post a graph again, but Pakse just reported updated info. At 11 PM water level was 11.589 m.

I was in the Congo in 1972 and our guide insisted we move about 15' above the waterline. We thought he was mad, but in the morning the river was less than 8' from our camp.

Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
And this map explains why it's happening. Heavy rainfall in Laos and northeastern Thailand between 7AM yesterday and 7AM today. Combined with water releases from reservoirs in Thailand.

Phnom Penh is pretty protected in terms of overhead storms...those from Myanmar and Thailand, and Vietnam, have lost a lot of force by the time they get here.
River-borne delayed effects is a different story.

Re: Flood alert and heavy rains for some provinces.
Something very strange going on with the water level sensor at Pakse (southern Laos).
Water level of the Mekong River supposedly dropped from 11.912m (14:15) to 9.604 (14:45)
That's a 2.3 METERS drop in half an hour, which seems totally incorrect.
Later measurements (15:00 and 15:15) reported around that last figure.
It's now officially well below the alarm level.
