Century's Longest Lunar Eclipse Visible from Cambodia, July 27-28, 2018

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the 21st Century Coming End of July, but the U.S. Will Miss Out
July 06 2018
The longest total lunar eclipse this century will adorn the Eastern Hemisphere's night sky at the end of July, but the U.S. will miss out on this one.

On the night of July 27-28, the Earth will completely block the sun's light on the surface of the moon for a total lunar eclipse that will last a full 1 hour and 43 minutes, making it the longest of the 21st century, Earth Sky reports.

The moon will remain under the earth's shadow for a total of 4 hours.

The last lunar eclipse on Jan. 31, 2018, which was known as the Super Blue Blood Moon eclipse, lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes. The longest possible total lunar eclipse is 1 hour and 47 minutes.

From the eclipse's start to its finish, the moon will take 3 hours and 55 minutes to cross the Earth’s dark umbral shadow.

Astronomers say the eclipse lasts so long because it will pass directly into the darkest region of Earth's shadow.

The eclipse will be visible to people living in the Eastern Hemisphere, meaning Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. North America, most of the Arctic and much of the Pacific Ocean will miss out entirely, Earth Sky reports.

Madagascar and the Middle East will have the best view of the eclipse around midnight. Europe and Africa can view the eclipse during the evening hours, while most of Asia, Indonesia and Australia will have the best view in the morning.

It's all happening tonight. So get out there and watch the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century.

Blood Moon 2018: Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of Century Occurs July 27
By Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor | July 26, 2018 12:35pm
The longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century takes place this Friday, July 27, 2018.

The total phase of the "blood moon" eclipse of July 27 will last 1 hour and 43 minutes, during which Earth's natural satellite will turn a spectacular red or ruddy-brown color. From start to finish, the entire celestial event will last nearly 4 hours.

The eclipse won't be visible to viewers in North America, except via webcasts. But observers in much of Africa, the Middle East, southern Asia and the Indian Ocean region will get an eyeful, given cooperative weather, according to lunar scientist Noah Petro, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

July's total lunar eclipse occurs on the same day the planet Mars reaches its opposition, when it will shine at its best in the night sky. This month, Mars will be at its closest to Earth since 2003. After opposition, when Mars will be brightest, it will reach that closest point on July 31.

Why is it the longest of the century?

"What controls the duration of the lunar eclipse is the position of the moon as it passes through the Earth's shadow," Petro told Space.com. The darkest part of Earth's shadow is called the umbra. You can picture the umbra as a cone extending from Earth in the opposite direction to the sun, Petro explained.

"The moon can either graze through the cone, or go right through the middle. That [the middle] gets a longer-duration eclipse," he said. "This time, the moon is passing closer to the center of that cone, and it's therefore a little bit longer than the eclipse we had back in January."

Really heavy rain all night and a 6 hour thunderstorm, with highlighted lightening as a result of the total dark.
