I think he definitely is real, but exists in a parallel universe/era where things like "bridewealths" are a concern.

Re: Advice about Bridewealth?
There was actually a girl in the village that bolted on wedding day. The village/commune cops went to Temple town to find her, arrest her and drag her back for the ceremony. No guarantee that she won’t run after being married.

Re: Advice about Bridewealth?
Far as I know bridewealth is a gift in expectation of marriage and therefore it has to be given back if the marriage is cancelled by the bride. if you cancel it she will keep a good proportion if not all as compensation. If she cancels it then there might be some negotiation depending on why, like if she catches you in bed with her sister.
Used to be similar idea in Europe. If the bride cancelled the wedding she had to give you back the engagement ring because that was part of the marriage contract

gf sister married a local guy in Savy Rieng, Mom wanted her married so being the good daughter she agreed.
day after she left him and went home. Had to pay back the $3,000 the groom gave the family..

Re: Advice about Bridewealth?
I paid a $10k “bride price” and apart from the ceremony where the family all held the cash for photos my wife got all of it.
She spent it a week later on some land in SHV in 2013. It’s now worth $100k! Smart.
