Let's hope they build dams better than they build buildings

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Let's hope they build dams better than they build buildings

Let's also hope this puts an end to power outages in SHV, or is all the power going to be sold to Thailand?

A 246-megawatt Stung Tatay Hydropower plant owned by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC) started generating electricity on Wednesday, Chinese media reported yesterday.

CHMC invested $540 million into the hydropower plant, located in Koh Kong province, after receiving a 40-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement from the Cambodian government in 2010. It marks the second Chinese-owned hydropower plant in Koh Kong province to start producing power this year.

In February, China Huadian Corp, which has also been granted a 35-year BOT licence, commenced producing electricity at its $500 million, 338-megawatt plant located on Lower Russei Chrum River.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Chinese firms have invested $1.6 billion to construct six hydroelectric dams in Cambodia, with a total capacity of 928 megawatts. All are now operational.

Ohh, it’s online now ? That’s the power plant in Koh Kong (Tatay) that collapsed about 3 years ago due to heavy rainfall  . Don’t remember how many people got killed. Don’t you worry – it’ll collapse again……Chinese quality structure, built with tons and tons of corruption (and little cement).

Actually large scale irrigation systems are one of the few things they are good at. They've only been at it for a couple thousand years. The Dujiangyan diversion system has been in operation since 300 bc.

That's surely true, but only if they build sth. for themselves. Do not underestimate the consequences of corruption.
Four missing, seven injured.

Four workers have gone missing after the collapse of an in-progress hydropower dam in Western Cambodia, apparently due to partial collapse of a tunnel-like structure of the dam’s reservoir.

The Associated Press reports that the Saturday collapse occurred at the Stung Atay Hydroelectric Project, a $255-million dollar dam on the Atay river, funded by the Chinese state-owned China Datang Corporation.

A search is underway for the four missing workers, reports the Herald Sun Australia.

At the dam site on the Atay river in Pursat province all construction work has been halted for the time being.

Seven other Cambodian workers were injured in the incident, with several of them suffering broken bones, beside the four that have gone missing in the incident. An eyewitness, according to AP, reported that all the water formerly in the reservoir has been drained..

I doubt that any large construction project has ever been built in China without workers dying. Life is cheap here. 70 000 people died in the 08 earthquake and the locals just say China has too many people anyway. Never seen a construction worker here wear boots, just slippers and shower shoes.
