Two Nigerians arrested in Cambodia for trafficking 1 kilo of cocaine

PHNOM PENH, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities have arrested two Nigerian men for allegedly smuggling one kilo of cocaine into Cambodia, according to an Interior Ministry's Anti-Drug Department report on Sunday.

Okoro Chukwuka Boniface, 28, and Obiora Dozie Frank, 33, were caught by anti-drug police officers on Thursday in Phnom Penh after they imported the illicit drug from Colombia, the report said.

It added that the suspects hid the drug in a box of fake jewelry and sent it to Cambodia via DHL shipping company.

Haha, the facial expression of the guy on the right. I think he did a few grams en route.

I wonder if they got the names mixed up. The guy on the right is named Dozie, but the guy on the left looks Dozie.

At the hearing, the suspect Okoro Chukwuka Boniface acknowledged that all the drugs belonged to him, and that they had been ordered from Colombia, at a cost of $15,000. The drugs were disguised in a container full of jewellery.
The other Nigerian, Obiora Doze Frank, confessed that he didn't know anything about those drugs, because on the day that he was arrested, he took his friend to the hospital.

Nigerians charged with drug trafficking
July 6, 2018
Two Nigerians charged with smuggling more than a kilo of cocaine into Cambodia from Colombia went on trail yesterday at Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Presiding Judge Seng Rithy said Boniface Okoro Chukwuka, 28, and Frank Obiora Dozie, 34, were charged with drug transport and trafficking. They face a life sentence each if convicted.

Judge Rithy said the two were arrested on July 13, 2017 by Anti-Drug police working with customs police at the Phnom Penh airport.

He added that after their arrests, police seized 189 packs of cocaine, weighing 1.1 kilos, which were hidden in a box containing imitation jewellery that had been couriered to Cambodia.

During the trial, Mr Chukwuka admitted to the crime while Mr Dozie claimed innocence.
Mr Chukwuka said that he bought the drugs for $15 000 from a Nigerian man in Colombia and intended to sell it in Thailand.

The verdict is due next week.

[excerpts]
The Phnom Penh Appeal Court yesterday heard the appeal of two Nigerian men who were sentenced to a 30-year jail term and life imprisonment respectively in 2018 by the lower court for smuggling more than one kilogram of cocaine from Columbia to Cambodia in 2017.

Presiding Judge Nguon Ratana named the duo as Okoro Chukwuka Boniface, 37, and Obiora Dozie Frank, 36, former Nigerian football player with a Cambodian Football Team in Cambodia.

“Okoro Chukwuka Boniface was arrested after he had received the drug shipment from an anti-drug police officer at the DHL Express branch in Chom Chao commune,” Judge Ratana said reading the fact sheet.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on July 17, 2018, sentenced Boniface to a life sentence and Frank to 30 years in prison. The municipal court also fined both of them 70 million riels (about $17,000) each. They were charged with “drug transport and trafficking” under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Control.

Boniface said on the day of his arrest, he was hired by an unidentified Nigerian man to travel and pick up the shipment (drug) . A verdict is due on August 16.

Murderers seem to do this quite frequently. It seems to almost be the Cambodian way- Do the crime, justice is served once (sometimes) by meting out a suitable sentence as punishment. Then later, the second round of justice occurs where the convicted negotiate the sentences down.
