Re: More Chinese Takeover in Sihanoukville
Holy macaronis, I haven’t been to Kps in two years and just recently came back from there a few days a ago. I was shocked that all the hotels I knew that costed only 25$-30$ a night is now around 60$-80$
Couldn’t believe my eyes on how many signs are now written in only Chinese and khmer. I’m also surprised on the amount of Chinese men exposing their beer belly for the public to see. Furthermore, the city looks dirtier and almost all the places I walked I can smell and find cigarettes laying around all over the place. The place is a shithole now.
I’m not a Chinese hater, but I do miss the old kps vibe and so do many of my khmer friends and relatives from outside of kps.
Does anyone know if the locals in kps precieving the influx of Chinese positive or negative?

Well he’s not biased is he.Artful Dodger wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 5:21 pmAnd how many people became homeless and unemployed becuae of that place... regardless of the numbers you or I may assert, the numbers of locals displaced is fare greater.fatuousdrivel wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 5:06 pmHave you gone in a done a nationality’s count then?Artful Dodger wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 4:56 pm200 locals Really? That fucking huge orange tiled place (hotel/casino) on Victory beach only hires 35 locals. All just cleaners, security, gardeners and kitchen hands. All other workers are chinese.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 4:20 pmSad news. Though same time Xihu and Sunshine Bay hotels have hired over 200 people in last 30 days. All locals.
I know many locals who work on the casino floor in that casino.
Talk to Lars, formerly of purple bar on the serendipity beach evicted in the new casino expansion. My guess was around 400 displaced, he tells me more likely near or over 3ooo.
We will see long term how Cambodia fares. There’s many, like me, who are of the mind that this short term pain will be beneficial in the long term.
Bringing cambodia out of the 70s.

There may be many foreigner Chinese investors and a very few expats, but there sure as hell aren't many local Khmer who share your farsighted optimism.

If the price of doubling Khmer wages is having to see a beer belly, I'd say that's better than looking at well groomed and older white gents supporting an entire sex industry.I’m also surprised on the amount of Chinese men exposing their beer belly for the public to see.
What have Western powers done for Cambodia anyway except bomb it into oblivion which allowed the rise of Khmer Rouge and what all came after.
Trust me - the PRC will be very benevolent rulers compared to what Barang's have done to this country.

That’s odd. I get the impression many locals do feel like that.taabarang wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 6:15 pm There’s many, like me, who are of the mind that this short term pain will be beneficial in the long term.

Look, we have different views and I’m not going to bother arguing about opinions.

Agree to all points but 5 years. I doubt that there will be many proletarian Khmer workers to visit in 5 years.
