The 3 communities for the protection of nature from the wildlife sanctuary in Lumphat forest, Ratanakkiri, have signed an agreement with the Ministry of the Environment for controlling protected nature community areas.

The Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northeastern part of Cambodia, covering an area of up to 250,000 hectares. The sanctuary has been protecting animals and birds in danger of extinction. The protected area is a shelter for egg laying and reproduction, and is an important habitat for all these animals.

According to officials, the conservation activities in the area have been improving, but the animals and their environment are still threatened with illegal activities such as hunting, trapping, logging, and land grabbing. Since 2011, at least 500,000 hectares of Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary have been given to Vietnamese, Chinese, and domestic companies as Economic Land Concessions. This investment has had a negative impact on biodiversity. It is hoped that community involvement in natural resource management will help make conservation work more effective.

Based on this agreement with the Ministry of Environment, the community has the right to sustainably manage and harvest timber in its community under a five-year forest management plan.
