Honest Thailand - US Tourist Forgets Money Bag in Taxi

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Honest Thailand - US Tourist Forgets Money Bag in Taxi

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Many fine and honest people in Thailand. It's a shame this sort of thing is "news" though.

An American tourist, who had forgotten his handbag in a Pattaya taxi on Tuesday, got his cash in dollars and Bt50,000 back on Saturday.
Image
The tourist, John Edward, met and thanked the taxi driver, Prawit Meepian, 48, at Pattaya Police Station at 11am.

Prawit handed over the bag to the station on Tuesday when he found it. The bag had a passport, an ID card, credit cards and cash so police managed to contact the tourist.

Edward said he had taken the taxi to a pier but did not know that he had dropped his bag in the taxi. He said he was visiting Bangkok when Pattaya police contacted him.
He will be in Thailand until June 22. He said he was impressed at the honesty of the taxi driver and would return to Thailand again at the end of the year.

Another lucky tourist...

Australian engineer praises Thailand after 100,000 returned by honest cabby
13 July 2018
An Australian engineer is the latest happy visitor to benefit from the world renowned Thai honesty. And he has shown the generosity of Australians in return by giving a hefty reward to the driver.

Phillips John Tony Gussy, 55, (name transliterated from Thai) mistakenly left $4,100 Aussie dollars on the back seat of a cab he took from Suvarnabhumi airport to Sukhumvit Soi 22 on Wednesday night. The money is worth about 100,000 baht.

He didn’t realize it was missing until later and when he had flown to Samui to see his Thai wife he was amazed to get a call from radio station FM 91 that a cab driver had handed in his wallet.
He flew back to Bangkok and attended a handing over ceremony at the radio station in Pahonyothin Road.

Proving Australian generosity he handed a reward of $500 Aussie dollars to the thankful cabby – 12,000 baht.

22 December 2018
- A van driver in Koh Pangan has return $9,000 US (about 300,000 baht) to an Israeli tourist.

The governor of the province Wichawut Jinto praised driver Yaya Jemeng, 42, for displaying the legendary Thai kindness and honesty after returning the money at a resort on Wednesday night.

He said this was a fine example of public spirit and a boon for tourism.

He will send his deputy Prawet Thaiprayoon to the island on Saturday to give Yaya a certificate in honor of his great actions.

No. These stories come out every year. Just before high season and just after.

Strange.

The difference is in Thailand still the most people believe in their true Budism relegion. And besides that they also grow up with discipline in schools !

In cambodia there is zero discipline and they don't teach their childeren any good manners. They teach their childeren money money money you can see it all around the country childeren as young as 2 or 3 years old having a few hundred riel in their hand for hours and hours.. They never teach them to put it in their pockets for example! it is disguisting!

in cambodia most people believe only in the money aspect of Budism you can see that in the temples here. Locals can not go there without paying money otherwise it is a loss of face! They rather skip a visit than to show up with no money there! also they pray to get more money and get lucky. Rather than for health or other deeper thoughts..

And don't come with examples that you seen different sure not all of them but most of them!

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I somehow doubt you know any Cambodians, that's a bunch of nonsense.

Don’t be so sensitive!
It was just an off the cuff comment.

However. Thailand do go into tourism repair overdrive if they think Thailand has a bad name, for whatever reason. They do it so well though.

Forgetful Brazilian tourist leaves 91,000 baht on mini mart counter – but thankful for Thai honesty
9/01/2019
A Brazilian tourist was very thankful for the honesty of an employee at the mini mart in the PT gas station in Samut Songkhram.
Image
CCTV showed that the tourist with her family had left two envelopes on the counter – one contained 41,000 baht in cash and the other US$ 1,562 (worth about 50,000 baht).

She had arrived at the gas station in a van and was buying protective rain jackets.

Mini mart employee Pornpailin Seesot contacted the police and with the help of JS 100 radio station and immigration the van was located in Krabi.

The tourist had realized later that she had forgotten her holiday money but she had no idea where.
