Garbage Removal Operation Underway

Phnom Penh: The Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh has begun the removal of the garbage in Boeung Trobek canal. On July 11, 154 trucks worth of plastic and other trash had been removed, which equivalent to about 50% of the garbage in the water.

According to Mr. Sang Piseth, the director of Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh, people will keep throwing the trash into Boeung Trobek canal until it is totally blocked, causing flooding in the rainy season, so he ordered his team to clear the garbage out of the water and take it away.

Here we go again, cleaning up Phnom Penh's Boeung Trobek canal of trash.Once again, it's just like new, until the next time.

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): The officer of the department of public work and transportation reported that all trash in Boeung Trobek canal had been cleaned up 100%. The clean-up operation lasted from March 7-19, 2020.

An officer said that 350 trucks were used to drag the trash out of the canal, which is equal to 1750 cubic meters.

And here we go again - the Kohsantepheap Daily speaks out, (but is anyone listening ?) :

Phnom Penh: A heavy rain yesterday evening, May 30, 2022, washed more garbage into the drainage canal of Boeung Tumpun, which is already full of garbage. This problem requires our citizens to be responsible and "stop dumping rubbish", especially into and next to the canals and the drainage systems.

Littering in public places, blocked drains, and garbage blocking the canals is not new, especially in Phnom Penh, however, such bad habits should be abandoned.
Do not just clean your own front yard, leaving the trash in front of your house or throwing it in the ditch, because it will then cause a further problem of flooding, congestion, and pollution. These problems will then affect you and your family.

Just change your habits a little, the city will be cleaner everywhere! When you see pictures like this, what do you think?

Meanchey residents urge authorities to restore canals
Residents of Meanchey district appealed to the authorities yesterday to take immediate measures to solve sewer flooding along Stung Meanchey and Boeng Tompun canals.

Horm Huo, a resident of Chamroeun Phal village, Stung Meanchey II commune, Meanchey district, said yesterday that he has been living along the Stung Meanchey and Boeung Tumpun canals since 1979.

“Two months ago, a team from the district and Ministry of Public Works and Transport came down to clean the canal, but I noticed that the canal site was still full of mud and garbage,” he said.

He also requested the people living in Stung Meanchey II and Boeung Tumpun II communes to avoid throwing garbage in the canal which is blocking the smooth flow of water in the canal.

He added that when sewer flooding started affecting badly the businesses and travel a few years back, authorities restored the Stung Meanchey, Boeng Tompun canals. “Now everything is back to square one; the canal is filled with mud and garbage again.”

Dy Na, a resident of Sornsom Kosal village, Boeng Tompun I commune, Meanchey district, said yesterday that his house gets flooded even during light showers.

The reason, according to him, is irresponsible garbage dumping in areas near the sewers.

Garbage woes less, but more work needed

Garbage management in Phnom Penh is about halfway towards its goal of effective rubbish removal in the capital, as more than half of the city’s residents know how to classify and separate trash types and deposit rubbish for collection at the correct place and time, while the remainder are just careless.

The City Hall has provided good instruction on how to prepare trash for removal such as separating garbage types and depositing trash for collection at the correct time and location.

The capital’s residents, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh Keut Chhe said yesterday, have improved immensely in identifying and separating garbage types such as kitchen waste, hard garbage, plastic trash, and organic garbage before handing it over to garbage collecting agents.

“Garbage management in Phnom Penh is not 100% successful yet because people who are from other provinces and came to work in Phnom Penh still don’t understand the proper procedures for garbage disposal, and some are careless about separating trash types,” Chhe said.

Phnom Penh typically produced about 3,500 tonnes of garbage every day which jumps up to nearly 4,000 tonnes during festivals, however, the three companies working to remove garbage quickly in the capital are Cintri Cambodia, 800 Super-Gaea Cambodia, and Mizuda Sanitation Cambodia Co Ltd.

Cintri Cambodia Garbage Collection Agent director Khiev Vuthy said yesterday that about 65% of Phnom Penh residents are disposing of garbage properly.

“Garment workers who come from provinces across the country and live in rental accommodation don’t care about the proper disposal of garbage and they always dump rubbish in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Vuthy said.

It's been much cleaner in most districts since they introduced wheely bins. Of course there are still areas where people throw their trash in the nearby pond and burn garbage for fun or to deter bugs or get scrap copper or something. I feel like these cultural practices are rapidly dying out now.

If you have only one green wheelie bin how do you separate different types of garbage . Let me guess, Kitchen waste on the bottom, hard garbage in the middle, and plastic trash on the top. Should I tell my neighbours that use the same bin.

Nearly 700 present at campaign to clean Phnom Penh
Employees of private companies, government officials from some ministries, students and staff of some organizations and others came out to support the clean-up of Phnom Penh and collected tonnes of garbage.

The ONESTEPNOPLASTIC campaign saw the collection of nearly 10 tonnes of garbage, including recyclable garbage. The campaign has been running for almost half a year, collecting garbage in the provinces of major tourist destinations, including Kep and Siem Reap. According to the press release, the campaign was launched in July 2022.

Jacques Guichandut, Managing Director of All Dreams Cambodia, said that the campaign is a campaign designed to protect the environment in Cambodia, especially pollution by plastic bags.

Guichandut added that this campaign has received support and participation from the people of Cambodia, including private employees, organizations and government officials in some ministries.

Citizens criticize Dangkor district authority for smelly sewer water

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): On the afternoon of February 3, 2023 in Mol village, Sangkat Dangkor, Khan Dangkor, Phnom Penh, citizens complained about the problem of stinking water that flows out of the sewer on to the street, making it difficult for them to live there, and sometimes the slime from the pollution causes motorbike accidents on Boeung Ta Mart Road.

The residents living near the drain said that the sewer smell is strong even inside their homes, and that this has been going on for a long time; they have been complaining to the Dangkor authorities about the sewer smell for years, but the problem remains .
