Yes, they are totally useless.

I guess I'm the only person here who's had a positive experience with air coolers. The aircon I had in my office room wasn't enough and I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a bigger unit (which would have meant redoing the piping) so just added an air cooler ($450, same price as an ac would have been but without the piping cost and hassle) and it's great. The version that I have uses ice, idk if that's what makes the difference.
