Women face cocaine trafficking charges

A Chinese woman and a Cambodian woman were charged yesterday with trafficking three kilos of cocaine from Holland to Cambodia.

Huang Xue Fang, 39, from China, and Sar Sokunthear, 36, were charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court and could be jailed for life if convicted.

Major Seng Piseth, deputy chief of internal security police at the Interior Ministry, said that on Monday of last week, Post Office staff in Banteay Meanchey province seized two packages of cocaine weighing 2,000 grams in total.

He said that the packages, which were sent to the Post Office in Poipet city on the Thai border, had been posted in Holland. They were addressed to Ms Huang in Poipet city. The Post Office staff reported their find to police.

Police, in collaboration with the prosecutor of Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court and Post Office staff, then prepared a scheme to arrest the suspect.

On Thursday of last week, a Post Office worker phoned the suspect and told her to pick up the package.
“She was arrested when she came to receive the packages of drugs from police at the post office,” Mr Piseth said

Based on Ms Huang’s confession, police moved in on Ms Sokhunthear on the same day at a post office in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district. After her arrest, police seized another kilo of cocaine.
