120 kgs of drugs were seized at Trapaing Kreal international border checkpoint on the Cambodia-Laos border, concealed in a Sorya 168 bus coming from Laos traveling to Phnom Penh. The shipment appears to have been expected by the authorities. Three suspects were arrested by Cambodian police at the scene.
[Note: There is a translation problem with the kind of drug that was seized, which should be cleared up shortly. The Chinese translation above says it was ecstasy. one Khmer version says it was heroin, and another says ice or methamphetamine.]

Biggest drug bust marks anti-drug day

As the government marked International Day Against Drugs yesterday, authorities in Stung Treng province managed to seize more than 100 kilos of methamphetamine being smuggled into the country from Laos.

General Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, said that the seizure is the largest made by authorities, ever.

“The important thing is that we want to know who the drug senders were and who was supposed to receive them,” Mr Vyrith said.

Gen Vyrith said the drugs were being smuggled through Trapaing Kriel International Checkpoint, adding that police have detained three suspects.

STUNG TRENG - Stung Treng provincial police said on Wednesday that they are questioning three suspects arrested on Tuesday for allegedly bringing 120kg of drugs into Cambodia through Laos.

Gnem Borim, head of the Trapaing Kriel International Border Checkpoint at the Laos border, said his forces used an X-ray machine to inspect the luggage of a bus belonging to Phnom Penh Sorya Company.

Upon doing so, they discovered 120kg of methampehtamine in bags allegedly belonging to Chhiev Thearo, 35, Hem Savorn, 35, and Thiev Tong Hai, 37. They were arrested and sent to the provincial police station for questioning.

“The three men are Cambodian. They travelled from Pakse, Laos, with 120kg of methamphetamine in their suitcases that were stored in the baggage area of the bus. They intended to smuggle the drugs across the border into Cambodia,” Borim said.

He said the driver and other staff members of the bus company were also arrested and the bus has been seized pending the completion of investigations.

Chhem Chamnan, a Sorya Company representative, said previously that neither the company nor its staff was involved in the matter.
“Our company provides the transportation service. But we are not responsible for checking the passenger’s belongings,” Chamnan had said.
