Super-rare giant sponge discovered in seahorse hotspot

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

A seahorse survey conducted by Fauna & Flora international (FFI) and its partners in Cambodia's first dedicated marine protected area has served up a spectacular surprise in the shape of a super-sized – and incredibly rare – sponge, the first official record for the country.

Resembling a giant wine goblet, Neptune's cup sponge has acquired almost legendary status among marine biologists, not least because it went missing for over a century.

The latest discovery at a second FFI project site – this time in Koh Rong Archipelago – is not only significant in its own right, but also suggests that the sponge's sandy bottom habitat and the marine life found there have the potential to thrive when protected from commercial trawling, which can have a devastating impact on the seabed.

Dont tell the Chinese about it.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Too late. I told to my Chinese friends about this, about your racist message and about Violets racist thoughts.
We all had a good laugh.
Thank you.

Sorry Sir, i still don't get where is the irony. What i have read your postings, i have a idea that you are a very nice smart guy and i am not looking any fight with you. Just would like to understand your point of view.

If you mean that i am not supporting some westerners complaining about Chinese people doing good things for Cambodia, then blame on me.
I wonder what those westerners has done for Cambodia? How much you (they) paid in taxation last year to Cambodia? How much money did you (they) bring from outside of Cambodia in to Cambodia and in to local economy?
How many people do you (they) employ and how much salary are you (they) paying to them each month?

These are just some questions i would like to know from people who are so eager to criticize about what China is doing.
