Kandal: On June 17, a 34-year-old man, So Saly, was arrested for illegally carrying a weapon, and for scamming three victims by wearing a uniform of the Royal Gendarmerie and pretending to be a member of the gendarmerie. The three victims filed a complaint against the suspect on June 04, 2018.

The suspect 'borrowed' a number of items from the victims, while pretending to be a member of the Royal Gendarmerie: a motorbike from a 38-year-old man, Mearn, an iPhone from a 30-year-old man, Sodanou, and two phones from Pheap, the 34-year-old girlfriend of the suspect. After that the suspect disappeared, cutting off his phone connection, so the victims were unable to contact him.
The victims said the suspect had told them that he worked in the Royal Gendarmerie and that he had just been transferred from Pailin.

After the victims filed a complaint with police, the general Som Tola ordered a search for the suspect who was arrested on June 15 in Siem Reap in a rented room.


The suspect was found in possession of a pistol K59 with one bullet, a uniform of the Royal Gendarmerie, some documents, telephones, and various other items which were confiscated by police. The suspect was transferred to the Kandal police station to prepare the case for court.

Man ‘posing as Military Police’ sent to court

A man was taken to the Kandal Provincial Court on Monday for allegedly claiming to be a Military Police officer to defraud three people, a Military Police official said.

Uy Sovanna, chief of the district force’s Criminal Investigation Office, said So Saly, 34, was arrested on Friday in Siem Reap, where he was hiding, after police received reports from three victims on June 4, including his girlfriend.

“He bought a military uniform from [a] Phnom Penh market and told the victims he worked at the Kandal Military Police Station. He borrowed a motorbike and three phones from three victims but then took off,” Sovanna said. Police also found a gun on Saly during the arrest.
