Preceding Importance

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Preceding Importance

Post by VLayHo-ho-ho »

Why is it that Robin Williams' death (rest In peace) has caused more attention and emotion than the Ebola pandemic (fatal virus) in Africa?

Because more people with internet access are impacted by it?

Read some of his crap over the last 2/3 days.

Don't see him raising profiles or even awareness of the death tolls of Gaza/Cairo/Africa...I think you get my point.

But they're family.
"Life is too important to take seriously."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

In a word: empathy.

People are interested to things they can relate to. Strange people dying of a strange disease in a strange country are less engaging than an actor whose movies were culturally influential.

There are also studies that analyse the death toll required to overcome the distance to the news room in order for an event to be reported.
Scarier than malaria.
