In a way, she is actually quite lucky and 30 years could be considered a medium sentence. Had she done this in Malaysia, Indonesia or Vietnam, penalty would be death. In Vietnam, 600 grams or over is mandatory death, even if only the mule.

Venezuelan Drug Mule Appeals 30 Year Sentence at Supreme Court

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On the morning of 29 December 2021,the Supreme Court commenced proceedings to hear the appeal of a Venezuelan woman accused of trafficking nearly 1.5 kilograms of cocaine into the Kingdom of Cambodia from Brazil. The defendant was arrested on 12 September 2019 at the Phnom Penh International Airport, when anti-narcotics customs police found a total of 1449.43 grams of cocaine in her possession.

Supreme Court Judge Oeung Sieng read out a the dossier recalling that the defendant, Adelys Paola Loupez Alviarez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan woman, was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on 7 June 2018 to 30 years in prison, on charges of drug trafficking in contravention of Article 40 of the Law on Drugs Management. The defendant appealed, but the Court of Appeal upheld her sentence. She has now appealed to the Supreme Court.

Having commenced the hearing, the Supreme Court postponed the remainder of the hearing to the morning of 5 January 2022.

SC upholds sentence of Venezuelan woman for drug trafficking
The Supreme Court announced that it will uphold the sentence of the lower court for a Venezuelan woman charged with drug trafficking.

The announcement was released by the Supreme Court on January 5. The court stated that it will uphold the 30-year sentence for the woman.

The woman is identified as Adelys Paola Loupez Alviarez, 28-years old. This was confirmed by Supreme Court Judge Oeung Sieng.

Alviarez is charged with smuggling in nearly 1.5 kilograms of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia. She was arrested by the authorities at Phnom Penh International Airport.

Alviarez was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on June 7, 2018 to 30 years in prison for drug trafficking and trafficking under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Management.

She previously appealed to the Court of Appeal, which upheld her sentence. Then she appealed to the Supreme Court.
