Mongering in the low season

This is the part of the forum where we discuss Cambodia's nightlife! While most bars, nightclubs, pubs, beer gardens, and hostess bars are in Phnom Penh, we discuss the Cambodian nightlife across all of Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Kampot, and Sihanoukville. The main nightlife areas in Phnom Penh are on Street 136, Street 130, Street 110 and Street 51, but there are other party spots that aren't girlie bars where expats, tourists, and locals drink until the sun comes up. Feel free to post specials and promotions that relate to nighttime fun!

The expat doctor on the Kampot Noticeboard, whose patients are primarily barang afaik, posts a monthly update on general health issues he sees, and says there's 2-3 new cases of syphilis every month. For a sleepy town where nothing bad happens with zero vice, that's a significant number.

I find that hard to believe as Syphilis prevalence in Cambodia is very low. Even 15-20 years ago it started to decline. From 1998 to 2000, syphilis incidence declined from 9.0% to 1.8% and trichomoniasis incidence declined from 2.0% to 0.9%. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2640393/

I could understand if he was referring to Chlamydia or Gonorrhea
From 2005 paper High prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections among indirect sex workers in Cambodia.
HIV prevalence was 26%. STI prevalences were: 14% chlamydia, 12% trichomonas, 3% gonorrhea, and 0% syphilis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16314771

The rate was higher among brothel based sex workers as you would imagine and that year (2005) a survey reported: Prevalence of syphilis was 2.3%; chlamydia, 14.4%; gonorrhoea, 13.0%; and any STI, 24.4%. Prevalence of each STI in 2005 was significantly lower than in 1996, but essentially the same as prevalence observed in 2001.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2640393/

Prevalence of syphilis (% of women attending antenatal care) in Cambodia was reported at 0.1 % in 2012 https://tradingeconomics.com/cambodia/p ... -data.html

note he does blame it on the riff raff migrating from sihanoukville

in a post from January, he mentions 2 cases as being "last year", but the above are specific about new diagnoses monthly.

Dont forget I worked here from 1996 with the MOH and also on HIV and STI related issues. There were high rates of Syphilis when I worked in Southern Africa in the "80's and also in Aboriginal communities in Australia, but not here.

That's really surprising, interesting info, I could imagine having a couple of cases over the year, but not a month, (edit sorry I missed that he mentions plenty of Chlamydia or Gonorrhea) As you mention " he does blame it on the riff raff migrating from sihanoukville" could be tourists from Europe or Nigeria! :D

To throw the cat among the pigeons........

2005 ... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16314771
Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this study was to assess the baseline prevalence of and risk factors for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among beer girls enrolled in a behavioral intervention in Battambang, Cambodia.

METHODS:
Ninety-two of 114 women participated in baseline interviewing, HIV/STI testing, and STI treatment. Blood specimens were tested for syphilis and HIV infection. Self-administered vaginal swabs were tested for trichomonas, bacterial vaginosis (BV), gonorrhea, and chlamydia infections.

RESULTS:
HIV prevalence was 26%. STI prevalences were: 14% chlamydia, 12% trichomonas, 3% gonorrhea, and 0% syphilis. The prevalence of BV was 43%. A history of sex work was reported by 82%. Consistent condom use with clients was reported by 39%. Increased number of partners and symptoms of STI were significantly associated with HIV infection.

DISCUSSION:
These data suggest high sexual risk among beer girls in Cambodia. Targeted and frequent HIV and STI interventions are urgently needed in this population.

2017.... http://www.unaids.org/en/regionscountri ... s/cambodia

2017..... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5584046/
HIV prevalence remains high in Cambodia among female entertainment and sex workers (FESW), and amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) use significantly increases risk of infection.......
Median age of the 88 HIV-positive women was 32 years [interquartile range (IQR) 28, 35]; 50% were working in entertainment venues and 50% as freelance sex workers; 70% reported SMARTgirl membership. In the past 3 months, women reported a median of 15 sex partners, 38% reported unprotected sex, and 55% reported using ATS.
