OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada’s Senate on Thursday voted to legalize recreational marijuana, clearing a major hurdle that puts the country on track to become the first Group of Seven nation to permit national use of the drug.
The upper chamber Senate voted 56-30 in favor of the legislation but included amendments that the House of Commons will need to decide on before the law can be passed.
While there is not yet a definite date for when marijuana will be available for sale, the Senate was one of the last significant obstacles standing in the way of legalization as a number of Conservative senators oppose the bill.
Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor said earlier this year that marijuana would only go on sale a few months after it was legalized because the new retail system needs time to start working properly.
The amendments proposed by the Senate include tighter advertising restrictions and giving the provinces say over whether Canadians can grow marijuana at home. The government’s legislation would allow Canadians to grow up to four plants at home for personal use.

Or could be the millions of dollars escaping over the border as a tonne of US companies set up shop in Canada to invest in marijuana public companies because they cannot do so as US-registered companies.

There's a worldwide chemical drug crisis which is creating very bad problems everywhere. Arresting and imprisoning people for smoking or selling weed just fills up the courts and the prisons. Cannabis is only a threat to society because it's an underground economy.
Prohibition creates criminals and criminal networks. And this is all so last century... bigger dangers await. Look at the meth explosion in SEA (and elsewhere) as an example.

Re: Canada to fully legalise cannabis
People seem to forget, or be totally unaware, that this decision was made by the extremist Justin Trudeau left wing government without the benefit of a referendum after receiving less that 40% of the popular vote. At least in the US states that approved marijuana there was a referendum where a majority of the voters approved it. There were calls for a referendum on this and another unrelated issue but the Trudeau government ignored these calls and moved to shove this legislation down our throats. There is considerable opposition to legalized marijuana in Canada but this goes unreported by the dishonest mainstream media, particularly the CBC (state broadcaster which benefits from $1.5 billion annually from the government). It is mainly a rural vs urban issue and it appears that the majority of stoners reside in the urban areas. The main bones of contention are drug testing for persons in the workplace (privacy concerns) and the lack of any credible or effective means of testing drivers for impairment (unlike methods for testing for alcohol impairment). The young Justin refuses to address these concerns while courting the stoner vote. Unfortunately, it will most likely take several serious injuries or deaths (or both) to get any official attention.
Recent polling suggests that if an election were called today the Trudeau Liberals would lose to the Conservative party. People are displeased with the young Justin's handling of this and other matters, including the NAFTA negotiations.
As an aside, it appears that Trudeau's obsession with this issue stems from the arrest of his younger brother decades ago for possession of marijuana during a police search of his vehicle. If I recall correctly, it was after a traffic accident. The elder Trudeau (Pierre) somehow got the police to drop charges against the younger brother: the Canadian version of tea money is the suspicion. The younger brother was subsequently lost on a ski or snowboarding trip in the Rocky Mountains that was blamed on an avalanche. The body was never found. No one knows if drugs were involved in that incident or not. In any event, it was a sad end.

Bullshit. I don't care one way or the other. Global News in November:The report, released by Halifax, N.S.-based Dalhousie University on Tuesday, with preliminary results provided to the Financial Post, shows that 68 per cent of people agreed or strongly agreed with legalizing recreational cannabis.
An Angus Reid poll indicates that, despite two-thirds support for legalization, more than half of Canadians across several provinces aren’t sure their governments will be prepared for the upcoming July 1, 2018, goal.

So as soon as it becomes legal we can expect to see a spate of horrible road deaths? There are more stoners in the urban areas cos there are more people in urban areas, and almost certainly more young people in urban areas.
You lost me at "the extremist Justin Trudeau left wing government" ?

Re: Canada to fully legalise cannabis
Cannabis becomes legal in Canada
Country becomes second and largest with legal national marijuana marketplace
Canada legalizes marijuana: here’s everything you need to know
Associated Press in Toronto
Wed 17 Oct 2018 08.36 BST
The Canadian government is ready to pardon those with a cannabis possession record of 30 grams or less as the country becomes the world’s second and largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace.
A federal official said Canada would pardon people with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the new legal threshold, with a formal announcement due later on Wednesday.
The use of medical marijuana has been legal in Canada since 2001 and Justin Trudeau’s government has spent two years working toward expanding that to include recreational marijuana. The goal is to better reflect society’s changing opinion about marijuana and bring black market operators into a regulated system.
Uruguay was the first country to legalise marijuana, in 2013.
Legalisation began at midnight with shops in Canada’s eastern-most provinces the first to sell the drug.
