Golden Sorya Mall transformed into "Phnom Penh Pub Street"

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

-or- they are promised that all the other bars catering to barangs will be closed down and they will have monopolies
Sounds possible also, but when you see the rent they askin in the jet contener market and all those ghost contener market(600-800$ + for a bar that is smaller then a jail cell), it could just be stupidity as well, time will tell i guess

Made a rare visit to 51 over the weekend. Popped in to the Pub Street complex. Popped out 1 minute later. It was fancier that what I expected and an improvement over the old model, but just tumbleweeds. Maybe it'll pick up during the high season. Mixing it up with a food court and restaurants would have been a better idea. I remember when the original GSM opened, and they had alleyways of women's clothing shops. The young manager proudly told me it was his idea. I could see that putting everyone together in one spot selling the same product will lead to everyone cutting each other throats and all would lose. It looks like they're trying that formula again.
