Nigerians, Cambodian in drugs arrest
Two Nigerian men and a Cambodian woman were sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday [20 November]for allegedly smuggling more than two kilograms of ecstasy from Belgium to Cambodia.
Lieutenant General Loeuk Vannak, chief of the Anti-Drug Department at the Ministry of Interior, identified the suspects as Onu Abel Michel, 39, Okeke Sabinus Chimankpa, 34, and Maes Veansa, 37. They were arrested last week at different locations in Phnom Penh.

“They are drug ringleaders who have been hiding in the country,” Lt Gen Vannak said. “Our forces are now searching for other suspects with links to this case.”
Sok Sarith, who works under Lt Gen Vannak, said police seized the drugs at Phnom Penh International Airport on November 15.

The package was hidden in a shipment of a local transport company, and had been sent by air from Belgium. The suspects were arrested when they came to pick up the package from undercover agents. They risk life imprisonment.

Two Nigerian men and a Cambodian woman went on trial yesterday at Phnom Penh Municipal Court for allegedly trafficking more than two kilos of ecstasy from Belgium to Cambodia last year.

Presiding Judge Chea Chansodeth said they were arrested on November 16 and 17 last year by Interior Ministry anti-drug police in Sen Sok and Meanchey districts.

Deputy prosecutor Sok Bun that on November 15, anti-drug police, in collaboration with custom and excise police at Phnom Penh International Airport, seized a package of ecstasy weighing 2,054 grams hidden in a shipment through the DHL transport company which had been sent by air from Belgium.

He added anti-drug police set up a scheme to arrest the suspects.
“The accused Mean Veasna was arrested when she came to pick up the package of drugs from the police at the DHL company on November 16,” Mr Bun said. “Based on her confessions, police arrested the other two at their rental house in Stung Meanchey commune. They were arrested on the basis of strong evidence.”
