I bit the bullet and moto'd over to Oressey this afternoon with one of the team (i.e. non-tourist card) and took a pair of business pants I bought in Australia. I found a likely looking tailor (my old regular from that area is now gone, building has evolved into something else) and asked if they could make a jacket to match. They actually had an exact match for the fabric and initially quoted $80 for the jacket. When I was not overly enthusiastic it changed to "Oh, you want a heavy jacket or a light jacket? We can make a light jacket for $60."

Incidentally, my initial quote for a two-piece suit was $250, not $210 as I originally posted.

I was much happier with the $60 quote and then asked if the business pants I took in could be adjusted, as I'm significantly lighter than when I arrived. The tailor measured and fussed around, and then said it couldn't be done. It wasn't a sales pitch, he seemed genuinely disappointed that he couldn't do anything with the pants. I thought I'd take them back to my current tailor in Boeung Tompun and ask for a second opinion, but asked as an afterthought about new pants to match the jacket. $15. I thought I'd misheard, but $15.

So, $75 for a two-piece suit in a fabric you'd buy from a high-end tailored suit shop in Australia.

The proof will be in the quality of the workmanship, but so far I'm stoked and will report back later, including the company details.

They can't make good suits or shoes here. Take a $50 flight to Bangkok or a $150 flight to Hong Kong if you want anything that isn't more than a tailor fitted garbage bag made of flammable polyester. You'll pay less too.

Just an update - I picked up the suit from the tailor today and was very impressed. Fitted perfectly, with no additional fittings required. The same fabric I buy in Australia, and no hidden extra charges. I'll buy some extra pants to go with the suit, and probably another jacket some time in the future. I get the impression they outsource the suit making, but the measuring was thorough and accurate enough for a good fit.

Here's the crazy part though - as much as I'd like to recommend the tailor they don't have business cards, no business or street information is posted on the shop itself, and the Google Street View of the place is obsolete. The best I can say is that it's across from this entrance of Orussey, in Street 115, behind that tuktuk. The Street View capture is dated 2013 so I imagine that tuktuk has moved on by now.

If anyone seriously wants the recommendation I can help you find the place.

In a freaky coincidence, I think the tailor is setting up shop at the moment that photo was taken.
