A newborn boy was rescued and sent to the National Children Hospital on Tuesday after a garment worker who delivered her child abandoned him at a factory’s bathroom in Kong Pisey district, Kampong Speu province, on Saturday.
Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said the woman had delivered the baby and left him on the floor of a washroom at Wing Star Shoes Co Ltd, where Sen Sokhea, another worker at the factory, discovered him.
Sokhea, who took the baby to the National Children Hospital, has also decided to adopt him.
Sina said: “The mother had a premature delivery and gave birth in an unhygienic bathroom. The baby is also not in good health and weighs only 1.06 kilograms,” he said, adding that the union is checking to ascertain the mother’s identity.
In the meantime, Sokhea is spending her own money on the baby’s care and medical treatment. She is appealing for donations and hopes to raise about $700 to cover medical bills that piling up.
