What kind of idiot would hand over cash for a business and not get the business licence officially thumbprinted etc? The owner says she actually knows the chick who "bought" it. If that's the case, wouldn't she have been aware that Ellen was the actual owner?

She is acknowledged as the owner by Kampot expats.
Matt Morrison was left in charge as manager when Ellen went to UK to support a family member with cancer.
Matt has (allegedly ) sold it to someone, deleted his FB and done a runner.
Amazingly, the thread has not been locked or deleted.
Yet.
they have been increased reports of westerners been scammed , duped or cheated in KoW as if late.
actually now my favourite place is poi pet.

Ellen is most definitely NOT benefiting from this, or involved in anyway this being a scam.
I know her relatively well and she is not the kind of person to do this to someone. Her 'fault' is being too trusting, but debatable if that's truly a fault.
Awful that she's being done over in this way.

Re: Man sells cafe belonging to someone else...
So what happened after this? Unless Ellen went back to reopen the business (and wrangle the lease back) would the landlord just have cancelled the new lease, and taken possession of whatever was left? It's not like the new "owner" would have been paying the rent. Did she just lose it all?

Re: Man sells cafe belonging to someone else...
My guess is that she only told half the story. If I remember the thread correctly then she never gave a clear answer about the documents and the business licence etc. he probably had all the correct documents to sell the business (as he was supposed to sell it when she was away) and he just stiffed her on the sale and she wasn't in a position to do anything as all she had was a verbal agreement with the guy which is worth nothing in a court of law.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Fri May 18, 2018 8:20 pm So what happened after this? IIRC the sale was valid as he he acting as her representative, but just ran off without giving the owner her agreed share.angkorjohn wrote:My guess is that she only told half the story. Re: Man sells cafe belonging to someone else...
She said on FB that he had convinced the landlord to change the lease to his name without her knowledge, and had forged the documents for the business' "sale".
Regardless I guess she is screwed, but she might have been able to salvage the business if she had returned immediately and retaken possession.

OK:
personally i feel bad for her, but no way would i fund someone else s business,
but thats just me
If i was going to help someone it would be a poor khmer that was fucked over
PS: there trying to raise $9,000 which is what they feel they need to get back up and running,
than why did someone pay $30,000?

So glad that Ellie and Ed are not letting their tragedy keep them from moving forward. Happy to hear there is a campaign to get Ellie's 2.0 up and going. I appreciate how you presented the budget/ how the funds would be used. Wishing you well!
read more on the gofund me pageMy name is Ellie Gleeson, and together with my co-investor Ed Weinberg I lost the business I started in Cambodia in 2013. I lost it by trusting our café’s manager and my former friend, who systematically deceived us while preparing to sell our business. Two months ago, he received $30,000 in cash for our furniture, kitchen equipment and for facilitating a lease transfer on the home of Ellie’s café, after which he fled Cambodia to points unknown.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
