Gas explosion at Sher-e-punjab today!

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Begs the question, why didn't they check the upper floor for other people the first time? Especially given the toxic fumes and the risk of asphyxiation.
"fire too big, no go no go"

middle of brain surgery "tumour too difficult, no cut no cut"

middle of taxation accounting "maths too dificult, no count no count"

middle of car repair "screw too tight, no repair no repair"

middle of fucking "pussy too pain, no fuck no fuck"
Money is not the problem, the problem is no money

The staff were inside, and the firefighters had to break open the glass door to help them escape.
are they saying they were locked in?
That's the inference but I don't believe

Sadly this is an all too common occurrence, in Cambodia and around the world.
Fire kills four stuck on first storey
“The four were all on the first floor when the fire broke out on the ground floor,” he said. “But each floor is locked. There were four people, all staff members of the shop, who panicked and didn’t find a way out."https://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/ ... rst-storey

One dead in Prey Veng shop fire
“The cause of the incident is still unknown and our officers are inspecting the scene and performing an autopsy on the victim,” he said. “We couldn’t rescue her because she was locked behind two doors inside and it took us a long time to break in.”

Family of Four Killed as Fire Destroys Phnom Penh Home
A family of four died early Thursday morning when their home in Phnom Penh's Sen Sok district was engulfed in flames as they slept, a fire official said. ... A door leading to a space at the back of the house rented by two garment workers was locked, she added, as the pair was away at the time of the fire.https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/ ... refox-b-ab

A bit of relevant history.
Remember The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire? Tragically the working conditions that existed in the USA and England in the 19th Century, and improved as a rsult of the fire are all too prevelent in developing countries today.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City on March 25, 1911 was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the city, and one of the deadliest in US history.[1] The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and 23 men[2] – who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling or jumping to their deaths

Because the owners had locked the doors to the stairwells and exits – a then-common practice to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft[8] – many of the workers who could not escape from the burning building jumped from the high windows.

The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which fought for better working conditions for sweatshop workers.

:D When I said remember, it would have been more correct for me to say "let us not forget the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire"

Why the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Is Important Today
"It may not seem that the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, which happened over a century ago in New York City, would be relevant today — but it is. It was a tragedy that opened the nation's eyes to poor working conditions in garment factories and other workplaces, and set in motion a historic era of labor reforms."

Thanks to the efforts of the ILGWU and all who fought for workplace reforms, real changes got underway immediately; in 1911, New York State initiated the most comprehensive investigation of factory conditions in U.S. history. Their conclusions informed new standards that other states across the country replicated and built upon in subsequent years.

We can’t undo history and bring back those we’ve lost. But we can prevent others from suffering similar fates — and work to ensure both safety and fairness in the workplace — now and in the future.

The dead victim was a 17 year old girl, just arrived from her village in the countryside to work in the restaurant. She is from a very poor family. Donations are welcome to help pay for the return of the girl's body to her family and her village for funeral rites.
In fact, any offers of help from Sher-E-Punjab regular customers are probably welcome.
A woman died and four others sustained injuries in a fire yesterday at Indian restaurant Sher-E-Punjab in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district, officials said.

Prom Yorn, director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Fire Department, said yesterday at the scene that four people, two of whom were foreigners, suffered serious injuries and were admitted to Calmette Hospital.

“A woman was found dead in the mezzanine room where she worked,” he said, adding that authorities were trying to enter the room to retrieve her body.

Upon arriving at the restaurant after police took the body out of the room, Nhem Saroeun, 54, an aunt of the deceased, said her niece In Srey Mao, 17, just left her home village in Prey Veng province’s Kampong Trabek district to work at the eatery.

“I am so shocked to hear that she died in the fire,” Ms Saroeun said, adding that she would bring her niece’s body for a funeral in Kampong Trabek district.
She called for generous people to help chip in so that she could afford to pay for transportation of her niece’s body to her home.

“We are very poor. We do not have money at all to buy a coffin for her body and cannot afford to take her body home,” Mr Saroeun said.

I am a long term customer and would like to ry to help out the girl’s family, if anyone knows them or a way to somehow make contact with the aunt as the article seems to encourage this but not provide a way to do so?

I really empathise with their loss, it is so unfair. Had a similar experience with an employee that was heartbreaking to see unfold.

What's the penalty for the Nepalese guys posing as Indians who run Sharee Punjab where the explosion killed the poor 17 year old girl last week? Was it caused by them having unsafe working conditions? Reusing gas containers to save 5 rupees?
"The revolution did more than legally create the United States; it transformed American society... Far from remaining monarchical, hierarchy-ridden subjects on the margin of civilization, Americans had become, almost overnight, the most liberal, the most democratic, the most commercial minded, and the most modern people in the world." - Gordon S. Wood

You have irrefutable evidence that they are Nepalese?

Because the one guy speaks pretty good Telugu/Tamil, which is geographically about as far from Nepal as one can get.

Admin, can we move this bizarrely off-topic post (even for me) elsewhere?
