Remember The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire? Tragically the working conditions that existed in the USA and England in the 19th Century, and improved as a rsult of the fire are all too prevelent in developing countries today.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City on March 25, 1911 was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the city, and one of the deadliest in US history.[1] The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and 23 men[2] – who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling or jumping to their deaths

Because the owners had locked the doors to the stairwells and exits – a then-common practice to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft[8] – many of the workers who could not escape from the burning building jumped from the high windows.

The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which fought for better working conditions for sweatshop workers.

The dead victim was a 17 year old girl, just arrived from her village in the countryside to work in the restaurant. She is from a very poor family. Donations are welcome to help pay for the return of the girl's body to her family and her village for funeral rites.
In fact, any offers of help from Sher-E-Punjab regular customers are probably welcome.

A woman died and four others sustained injuries in a fire yesterday at Indian restaurant Sher-E-Punjab in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district, officials said.

Prom Yorn, director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Fire Department, said yesterday at the scene that four people, two of whom were foreigners, suffered serious injuries and were admitted to Calmette Hospital.

“A woman was found dead in the mezzanine room where she worked,” he said, adding that authorities were trying to enter the room to retrieve her body.

Upon arriving at the restaurant after police took the body out of the room, Nhem Saroeun, 54, an aunt of the deceased, said her niece In Srey Mao, 17, just left her home village in Prey Veng province’s Kampong Trabek district to work at the eatery.

“I am so shocked to hear that she died in the fire,” Ms Saroeun said, adding that she would bring her niece’s body for a funeral in Kampong Trabek district.
She called for generous people to help chip in so that she could afford to pay for transportation of her niece’s body to her home.

“We are very poor. We do not have money at all to buy a coffin for her body and cannot afford to take her body home,” Mr Saroeun said.

I am a long term customer and would like to ry to help out the girl’s family, if anyone knows them or a way to somehow make contact with the aunt as the article seems to encourage this but not provide a way to do so?

I really empathise with their loss, it is so unfair. Had a similar experience with an employee that was heartbreaking to see unfold.
