Wallet Stolen at 69 Bar, Phnom Penh, Street 136 (girly bar)
Re: Wallet stolen at 69
i witnessed how these things end up in 136's bars ... customers who make trouble or refuse to pay will be greeted with a bottle smashed in their heads, 5-10 khmer thugs will surrond him, and when police comes they will pretend a bribe too and if you refuse you're in deep shit ...
the crooks running the bars are untouchable and well protected, no way to fuck with them or to get any justice unless you're an even bigger bastard crook.
as for the girls, i know they're told by the mamasan to never rob customers when they're barfined but this rule is a bit more elastic with customers inside the bar itself ... probably the felt the OP was an easy pray ?
all things considered, i'm surprised the OP even recovered the empty wallet.

So, avoid St 136 bars all together?
Re: Wallet stolen at 69
I see a difference here because the guy dropped the wallet on the ground. That's just too much temptation for many people. Of course, people should return dropped wallets, but they often don't.
I can tell you one place where you never want to drop a wallet or cell phone or cash or anything of value. In a casino. The odds that the next patron will walk off with it are very high.
Not to get way too off topic, but there is a problem at casinos these days because slot players don't carry buckets of coins any more, the machines don't pay out coins, they pay out tickets that you then cash out at the cage.
Players are always leaving the tickets in the machines, or leaving the credits in the machines and going to the bathroom and then another patron walks up to the machine, hits the button to spit out the ticket, then they cash out the ticket and walk out the door. Then the first guy comes back from the bathroom and goes to security and says "Hey, I left $200 in credits on the machine when I went to the bathroom and someone stole it."
This stuff happens many times a day in casinos, then the casino is supposed to identify the perp and press charges and ban the perp from the premises, but if you do that, you will eventually end up banning most of your customers, because the vast majority of them will steal someone else's unattended credits off a machine if given the opportunity. And don't get me started on videos showing a little old lady withdrawing cash from an ATM, dropping a bill on the ground, then the lady behind her in line at the ATM picks the bill up (or steps on it) and steals the cash.
People shouldn't steal wallets and money dropped on the floor, but they do. The girl should be fired, but I don't think it reflects negatively on the bar as a whole. If you want a better chance of your dropped wallet being returned, drop it at church, not at the hooker bar.

Re: Wallet stolen at 69
Is that right? I haven't been to a casino in ages, but as I recall, the sound of coins rushing out when you win (even if it's just a few bucks) and carrying a bucket of coins around with you was a key part of the whole slot machine experience that helped hook people. A few tickets silently printing out is not the same sensation.Cam Nivag wrote: Not to get way too off topic, but there is a problem at casinos these days because slot players don't carry buckets of coins any more, the machines don't pay out coins, they pay out tickets that you then cash out at the cage.
Re: Wallet stolen at 69
The machines still make electronic coin dropping sounds but with very few exceptions there are no more coins.

Joon, I enjoy your double entendres. Try to keep it up.Joon wrote:Note to self: DO NOT ask Milord for small change.
Good change of avatar too. My earlier statement still stands. (She is a Chin from Western Burma.)
What do you expect from staff working at a bar named 69, honesty? ... Honestly? ... Really?
That's a long reach.

What in my view justify warning others about this bar is:Cam Nivag wrote:I'm not sure it's fair to impugn the bar because one impoverished staff member took the opportunity to pocket a dropped wallet
1. I did not know whether the wallet was taken out of my pocket or dropped, but the manager did not give a flying fuck about it when the matter was brought to his attention.
2. It was the lady who had accompanied me, not the manager, who suggested that we could get to the bottom of the matter by having a look at the surveillance video.
3. Even at that point, it took quite some discussion to get the manager to take the necessary action.
4. After having identified the perp, he said there was nothing more he could do when a search allegedly ended with no result. No apology was offered. If had run a similar business I would definitely have fired the lady on the spot.
5. The manager had obviously not put much effort into recovering the wallet, since it took less than two minutes to produce it after I assured I did not care about the money.
6. Left with an empty wallet, no apology was offered. The only person with decent behavior was the lady whom I had bought some lady drinks for, she offered to lend me cash for the taxifare, ( and no I had not barfined her, and I went home alone)
Given the variety of hostess bars in Phnom Penh, I definitely think it is justified to warn fellow board members about bullshit which would not occur in an establishment with serious management

well, you can only blame yourself and hopefully you learned the lesson.Flexnez wrote:6. Left with an empty wallet, no apology was offered. there's nothing inherently dangerous in these bars unless you act like a dick or drunken asshole, but we should be aware of how these places are managed and designed from the start to ripoff their customers.
first of all, there's zero loyalty to returning customers, nor they ever planned any special treatment for customers getting robbed of their wallet or whatever, all they know is that their ass is covered by the police and the thugs outside the bar, and they have to because as much as they're a bunch of crooks there's also the odd crazy customer who's more than willing to make a shitstorm or beat up the girls or pulling out a gun or whatever ...
these bars have always been a total ripoff anyway, many of the girls don't even fuck they just go there for the lady drinks, some have a husband who pick them up back home at 02-03AM, others have babies and family, others have so many sponsors they don't need to fuck around nor they need to put any enthusiasm while pulling lady drinks around, and in most of the cases these girls are totally disgusted by us so what's the point, it's an optical illusion unless she's of your same age, i remember just a single case that ended up in a fairy tale and guess what after a few months he escaped leaving her pregnant and pennyless, now she's back in another bar nearby and totally unrecognizeable, a nasty bitch while before she looked like the girl next door .. it's amazing how bad even just one year of this job is for a nice girl.
management ? what management ? for customers it's a no-win game, period.
and it's carefully designed to be that way, no exceptions.
the only exception is if a girl really likes you and she becomes your girlfriend or whatever but it still costing you time and money and all you've got is a reformed hooker in the best scenario ...
