Police search for Kandal man's body in alleged murder suicide
20 April 2018
Police are searching for the body of a Kandal man who allegedly killed his former partner with a machete outside a high school before jumping off a bridge in a suspected suicide attempt.

Ra Chairath, 21, killed his former partner, Ton Srey Noy, 20, on Thursday afternoon, according to Kandal Provincial Police Chief Eav Chamroeun. Authorities said he left a suicide video on Facebook.

“After the killing, the suspect fled with his motorbike up over the Tsubasa Bridge [Neak Loeung Bridge]. He jumped off the motorbike and jumped into the river,” Chamroeun wrote on Facebook.

“The suspect has not floated up so far, and the police were surrounding the place to arrest the suspect and bring him to face justice according to law.”

Nara said Chairath filmed a “live” video of himself before leaping from the bridge, although no trace of it could be found on Facebook on Friday.

Cambodian man kills ex-wife then commits suicide live on Facebook
Reuters Staff

PHNOM PENH, April 20 (Reuters) - A Cambodian man murdered his ex-wife and then jumped off a bridge in a suicide that he broadcast live on Facebook, police said on Friday, in the first such case reported in the country.

Facebook is the social media platform of choice for Cambodians. Nearly a third of the country’s 15.8 million people are Facebook users and the network is a major source of information, particularly for young people.

Ra Chhay Rath, 21, killed his former wife at a school on Thursday then went to the nearby Tsubasa bridge, in Kandal province, and jumped into the Mekong river. Only the suicide was broadcast, police said.

“It has never happened before. It was the first case,” police spokesman Kirth Chantharith told Reuters, referring to the broadcast of the suicide.

“We are investigating to find out why he killed his ex-wife.”

Reuters was able to access videos of the suicide on Friday shared by Facebook users. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had reported the video or asked for it to be taken down.

A spokesman for Facebook in Singapore said the company was not immediately able to comment on the Cambodia case.

Last year, Facebook said it would expand its pattern recognition software after successful tests in the United States to detect users with suicidal intent.

Police said the man’s body had not been found.

Reports on Facebook say that the suspect may have faked his suicide. He has allegedly been sighted in Steung Meanchey.

5 May 2018
Kandal: After murdering his wife and filming himself jumping off the Neak Loeung Bridge on 19 April, the suspect disappeared and no trace of his body was found in the water. Then on 4 May, a poster on Facebook posted the news that the murderer was hiding in In Russey village, Sangkat Steung Mean Chey, Khan Mean Chey.
Image
Koh Santepheap Agency immediately questioned police officers who denied that the murderer is alive and in hiding, saying that this is false information. However, the family of the victim and the general public remain skeptical as to the suspect's death. It has been pointed out that nobody saw any body floating in the river after the suspect filmed himself jumping off the bridge. The victim's family implore the authorities to track down the killer and arrest him.

The murder suspect was known to be a drug user and was often violent. His wife's family say that they were often concerned for her safety. Now they want the murderer arrested.
To be continued.
