Cambodian passengers complain of overcrowded bus

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Phnom Penh: Attitudes are changing in Cambodia, as passengers no longer docilely accept being squashed into overcrowded buses and minivans. They no longer accept the practice of taking on more passengers than the number of seats, and they are becoming annoyed with drivers who stop the bus every ten minutes to pick people up.

The passengers who were traveling by Olympic bus from Phnom Penh to Koh Kong on April 22, went on social media to complain about the bus which contained too many people. All the passengers were not happy that bus driver kept stopping on the way to pick up more clients. They also worried that the overloading could cause an accident.

Pretty sure the companies themselves are often not aware of this; nice little sideline for the driver and the tout.

Even had it happen with Giant Ibis a few years ago where the driver randomly stopped and picked up additional passengers.

It's now absolutely regular on Giant Ibis for them to pick up additional passengers and even do things like stop to buy food on the side of the ride or drop off a bag. Not out of the norm for them to drive fast or overtake dangerously.

This despite early claims that Giant Ibis was different because it didn't do any of these things.

They were pretty good in the beginning but service has indeed deteriorated.

I warned some guests not to use a particular company once, but they responded "we googled the bus companies and ALL of them have reviews saying "don't use this one". lol

Good advice that applies equally to every bus company in Cambodia.

Every time a friend tells me about a bus ride to koh Kong it is highly amusing.
A guy took a ride down there and a real downpour started as he realized the bus had no windshield wipers.

Better still are the bus rides to Koh Rong!

Another "highly amusing" minivan episode was when it started to get dark on a lonely country road, and then we noticed that the headlights kept flickering out... and anyway, we had to keep stopping to throw water on the engine because it was overheating. :plus1:
We got there in the end.
