Chinese numbers in Cambodian language

Post by explorer »

In the Cambodian language, the numbers 30, 40, 70, 80, 90 and 10,000, are pronounced the same as, or similar to, these numbers in Cantonese.

There have been a lot of Chinese trading in Cambodia for hundreds of years, traveling along the rivers. A lot also moved to Cambodia, and lived in Cambodia. They spoke various Chinese dialects. Some of them spoke Cantonese.

In Thai, some of these numbers are also pronounced similar but different, no doubt also coming from the Chinese.

Historically, the Vietnamese language was written with Chinese characters. When the French went in, they wrote the Vietnamese language with the French alphabet.

A bit of trivia. In Cantonese, one million is is one hundred ten-thousands.

No doubt, there are words from all of the neighboring countries.

30-90 were borrowed from Thai, which were probably influenced by the pre-Thai tai languages of southern China.

The Cantonese wiki entry shows Cantonese was heavily influenced by tai-kadai, so in fact the both Cantonese and modern Thai got their similar numbers and various other similar words from earlier tai languages, not through Cantonese influence on Thai.
