Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Chinese "Fake Monk" YAN FENGLONG Begging Riel Money, Arrested in Kampong Cham

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Kampong Cham: On April 20, a Chinese monk, YAN FENGLONG, was arrested in Kampong Cham for begging money as a monk without permission from the Cult office.
[Foreign monks, or foreigners dressed in monks robes, who live from begging money in Cambodia are often known as fake monks and their religious status is not recognized by Cambodia Buddhist authorities or the police. Cambodian monks are not permitted to ask people for money, or to sell amulets or blessings for money.]

The police took the Chinese monk to the Cult office for reeducation from the local religious authorities, and they asked him to sign an agreement to stop going around begging for money and selling false charms to the public.

I was hoping it was the guy who begs on Riverside and plays the bracelet scam. I know of at least two CEO members that have offered to get stoushy with him (Gonk, you offered to have a go too, didn't you?). If we have foreign visitors with us and he shows up, I warn the guests ahead of time that I'm about to be unchristian.

Those "monks"are bloody annoying, but I wouldn't go so far as to blame the Chinese authorities. Not all the fake monks are Chinese and not all Chinese are fake monks. :OD: (No fake monk smilies available. )

"The revolution did more than legally create the United States; it transformed American society... Far from remaining monarchical, hierarchy-ridden subjects on the margin of civilization, Americans had become, almost overnight, the most liberal, the most democratic, the most commercial minded, and the most modern people in the world." - Gordon S.
