New website with photos and stories from the 1970s

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

It has changed so much.

Back in the old days Phnom Penh was much smaller. There were rice fields between Phnom Penh and the airport. Most of the houses in Phnom Penh, and all of Cambodia, were wooden houses with thatched roofs. The old areas were already there. For example Psaa Tmai (new market / central market) and the buildings around it, were already there. Most of the brick buildings had tiled roofs.

Siem Reap was a small village. There were a few brick buildings built by the French. Nobody imagined how much it would grow with tourism.

Before tuk tuks there were the cyclos. There were also bicycles with trailers, but not roofs like tuk tuks. There are still a few around.

I know it's silly, but I always dream of one day having a time machine, and going back to Cambodia in the 60s and 70s.
I wouldn't stop there, of course, but it's on the top of my list.

Sure is a silly dream. Why would you go back in time when you could go forward in time.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

LoL, fair enough.

I kinda feel like I time travel when I go back to the US. I went back a few years ago and Nordstrom's or Macie's were selling iPhones in a vending machine, Blockbusters was closed and kids were all on those damn hover boards.

If you click on "Go to Dancers 1973", all the photos and text from Colin's exhibition at the Bophana are there. It brought tears to my eyes then and does so again now.

Thanks for sharing! There are some really haunting photos in his collection. Especially knowing how things played out, soon after these were taken.
