Cows die moo-steriously after drinking in pond
20 February 2018
PREAH VIHEAR - An investigation is underway to determine what caused 16 cows from two Preah Vihear province villages to drop dead over the course of several weeks, authorities confirmed today.
A dozen of the deaths occurred on Saturday in Cheb district’s M’lou Prey II commune and Sangke II commune.
Phav Yorn, a Kuoy ethnic villager, said that three of his cows died. He said villagers had let cows graze at the sugar plantation owned by the company Rui Feng and to drink water in nearby ponds, where they were later found dead and bleeding from the mouth. Although they were then sold to local villagers for meat, he claimed nobody had reported health problems.
Pean Phat, a villager from Brees Ka’ork village, said that an additional four cows had died two weeks ago. Phat said villagers had concluded that the water in the ponds near the plantation must have been poisoned.
“The poison was poured on the water sources ... nearby the sugarcane plantation…and the cow died when it drank the water, but we do not know who poured the poison,” he said, adding that a similar phenomenon had occurred during the last dry season, though no perpetrator was ever identified.
Khiev Yen, the Sangke II commune chief, said he suspected the poisoning of the ponds was done by local villagers who do so to kill wildlife in the dry season as a form of hunting.
“Our local people use the poison to hunt birds for food, when the cows drank the water, they got poisoned… we also found some remains of dead herons at the site,” he said.

UPDATE: The moo-mystery has been solved. It has been revealed that the reason for the death of the cows in Preah Vihear province was human stupidity. The commune chief was right to suspect local villagers.
Local people had deliberately poured poison into a waterhole in order to kill the wildlife that drink there. It also killed their neighbor's cows. And they are putting wildlife in the area at risk, including endangered species of birds.
WCS warns of poisoned wildlife meat
28 march 2018
The Wildlife Conservation Society expressed concerns yesterday over the poisoning of wildlife in the Northern Plains of Cambodia, an activity that could diminish endangered species in the region.
According to a WCS statement, endangered wildlife in the Northern Plains of Cambodia are facing a continued threat from the widespread use of pesticides to poison natural waterholes in order to pacify animals. Mao Khean, WCS’s biodiversity research project coordinator for the Northern Plains, said research teams found two cases of poison being used to kill animals in Preah Vihear province’s Chheb and Choam Ksan districts in 2018.
Mr Khean said the practise could affect the last remaining endangered vulture species such as the white-rumped, slender-billed, and red-headed vultures.
“In some of areas, people brought termite poison to use in agriculture. However, some people use the poison to kill wildlife, and in some cases domestic animals also died. The area is about six to seven kilometres from where the vultures dwell, so we are concerned that the vultures would perish when they consume poisoned meat.”
Song Chan Socheat, deputy director of the environment department in Preah Vihear province, responded by saying that the provincial governor and department of environment are working together to study the problem.
According to Mr Socheat, his team found a poisoned waterhole in Chheb district that poisoned ten cows that drank from it. Provincial authorities then used machinery to remove the waterhole and prohibited access to the area.
“We are trying to educate, disseminate and prevent people from using pesticides to poison wildlife,” Mr Socheat said.
