Yes and no

They knew what the app was doing for sure but this was supposed to be for academic purposes, university studies and what not, in no way did they know that information / data was being on sold to another party (so they claim and I tend to believe them, only because they probably would have sold it themselves for the money and done a better job of hiding it.)

Just to keep it in context, I am talking of this latest report about Cambridge analytica. I am 99% certain Facebook have sold user data to 3rd parties and governments already in the past multiple times for a magnitude of reasons, hence my argument above. The data is what makes the company worth anything, the selling of the data (mainly to advertisers) is what allows users the access the site for free and how Facebook make money.

Absolutely, but dressing this incident up as a "breach" is a bit rich. Once users' data is out of FB's hands it can be used by anyone for anything.

The biggest problem here, in my opinion, was that FB ever allowed users to give away other people's data, without their consent.

Technically it was a breach of contract between Facebook and the app developer so it was a breach.

But I admit it was the wrong word to use as it can be read as a breach as in a hack which did not happen in this case.

Volume of data suggests trusted partnership with Aleksandr Kogan, says analyst
Before Facebook suspended Aleksandr Kogan from its platform for the data harvesting “scam” at the centre of the unfolding Cambridge Analytica scandal, the social media company enjoyed a close enough relationship with the researcher that it provided him with an anonymised, aggregate dataset of 57bn Facebook friendships.

Facebook provided the dataset of “every friendship formed in 2011 in every country in the world at the national aggregate level” to Kogan’s University of Cambridge laboratory for a study on international friendships published in Personality and Individual Differences in 2015. Two Facebook employees were named as co-authors of the study, alongside researchers from Cambridge, Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley. Kogan was publishing under the name Aleksandr Spectre at the time.

A University of Cambridge press release on the study’s publication noted that the paper was “the first output of ongoing research collaborations between Spectre’s lab in Cambridge and Facebook”. Facebook did not respond to queries about whether any other collaborations occurred.

Aleksandr Kogan collected direct messages sent to and from Facebook users who installed his This Is Your Digital Life app, the Guardian can reveal. It follows Facebook’s admission that the company “may” have handed over the direct messages of some users to the Cambridge Analytica contractor without their express permission. The revelation is the most severe breach of privacy yet in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The social network admitted to the transfer of data in its warning to users whose friends had installed the This Is Your Digital Life app, which harvested data from not only the installer, but also all their friends on the site.

“A small number of people who logged into This Is Your Digital Life also shared their own news feed, timeline, posts and messages, which may have included posts and messages from you,” the company told affected users.

The statement appears to echo previously unreported claims made by Christopher Wylie, the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower. Wylie told the Observer that he had seen a table, produced by Kogan, that included private messages. It remains unclear whether GSR, Kogan’s company, or Cambridge Analytica ever used the messages to build any targeting models.
