Re: Tigers kill 20 pigs near Bokor Mountain
Is that the MO of a Tiger? I thought they killed something, took it away and ate it, not killed 20 and left them lying about.
Was talking to a guy that works for that big wildlife NGO and he said he was pretty sure there was not a tiger left: they have cameras etc. all over the place looking for them, and not a trace in years.
It's possible the good senator feels clearing a bit of nearby forestry might stop the problem recurring.

It should also be noted that Khmer call EVERY big cat a tiger. Including leopards, which there are a fair amount of.

Good news on the leopards. Didn't know that.
Wonder what they eat as there's poke all prey left either.

Mong Rithy... The wildlife expert! No way a Tiger (or TIGERS, as he claims) are responsible. Bokor is cut off from the Cardamoms. The only passage is that tiny strip (with people living around it) between Bokor and Kirirum. I doubt tigers would cross over there and though Bokor is still fairly big, it doesn't contain big game needed for tigers. Leopards would be possible I guess. One could probably tell by looking at the wounds. Maybe some frustrated villagers who have had their land taken from them killed them... Has he been connected to any land grabs?

I was studying Khmer last night looking for a definition in the dictionary and one of the results that came up (although not the word I was actually looking for) was:OrangeDragon wrote:It should also be noted that Khmer call EVERY big cat a tiger. ចហាង
1 n. kind of tiger (said to resemble a lion; found in Kampot province). Also written: ចៈហាង
... without an actual English name a pretty useless definition. But I wonder what big cat it could be?

Google translates ចហាង as "Shop"Rama wrote:I was studying Khmer last night looking for a definition in the dictionary and one of the results that came up (although not the word I was actually looking for) was:OrangeDragon wrote:It should also be noted that Khmer call EVERY big cat a tiger.
