Bar raids see 23 foreigners arrested for taking drugs on Thai island
23 foreigners arrested for drug offences on Thai party island
23 foreigners and 4 Thai nationals have been arrested for drug offences following a series of raids on Koh Phayam in Ranong province.
Koh Phayam is one of the lesser known Thai islands but officials have said it has become a haven for drug taking foreigners as marijuana and amphetamines are readily available on sale at local bars.
On Saturday 9th March, a team of 50 officers from Ranong Police, Tourist Police, military and district officials raided bars across the island.
27 people who were tested at the scene were arrested after failing drug tests for marijuana and amphetamines. Further tests carried out later at Ranong hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in their system.
All those arrested were taken to Ranong Police Station.
Police said they will continue to crackdown on the illegal drug trade on Koh Phayam.

Re: Bar raids see 23 foreigners arrested for taking drugs on Thai island
It used to be a great little place to chill out on and had a good mix of old time hippies and expats staying there for a couple of months at a time, lots of little parties on the beach,,, then along came the internet and every eurotrash gap year poser started turning up. Not that I can really blame them as it is a pretty little island with good beaches.
Oh well, i guess that's progress for you.

The Thai police have been raiding places and doing mandatory drug tests for as long as I can remember. You weigh up the risks wherever you are, and for me I don't think its worth getting stoned in Thailand.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Not to mention the shitty shitty quality of ditch weed available, compared to hydroponics. I haven't smoked anything for about 10yrs but I doubt they have improved their growing skills much, afterall it is Thailand and they ain't known for progressive thinking.John Bingham wrote: ↑Mon Mar 12, 2018 12:16 am The Thai police have been raiding places and doing mandatory drug tests for as long as I can remember. What could possibly motivate a crackdown in such a quiet sleepy island?

News got out that some businesses on the island were selling drugs. Places with names like Rasta Baby and Hippies bar.shnoukieBRO wrote: ↑Mon Mar 12, 2018 2:36 am What could possibly motivate a crackdown in such a quiet sleepy island?
12 March 2018
- The raid on Friday in the province’s Muang district was part of the authorities’ joint operation to search the island’s three night entertainment venues, Ranong Tourist Police inspector Pol Lt-Colonel Manaporn Likhitmanont told a press conference on Saturday.
Fifty police, soldiers and local administrative officials took part in the search operation dubbed “Cleaning Koh Phayam”.
Twenty-three foreigners and four Thais, allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana and yaba pills, were taken for testing to Ranong Hospital. After they tested positive, they were taken to the Pak Nam precinct to face further legal action.
Manaporn said the operation followed a Tourist Police investigation that found some night entertainment venues on Koh Phayam selling marijuana to customers, who were also regularly allowed to openly take the drug on the premises. The raids were conducted on Rasta Baby, Hippies & Rest in Ao Yai area, and Hippies Bar in Ao Khao Khai.
