Two American Women From California Arrested in Chiang Mai, Thailand For Trying to Exchange Fake US Dollars

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Two American Women From California Arrested in Chiang Mai, Thailand For Trying to Exchange Fake US Dollars

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Two women on vacation in Chiang Mai from California, have been arrested and their passports are being held after they were allegedly caught trying to exchange counterfeit dollars at a money changer.

Misty Eichholz and Danniel Paquette landed in the country on Feb.16 and were planning a month long vacation through Thailand and Cambodia.

Their GoFundMe page has raised over $10,000, and this is their last update:

"To all of our friends, family and kind strangers, we are so overcome with emotion from the love and support we are receiving. This has been a very humbling experience. Being a foreigner in another country's judicial system is no joke. We would be completely lost in it if it weren't for all of our friends reaching out to their friends and connections. Your donations have paid for our bail, and now a good lawyer. We are awaiting to hear what the next step is. We have been treated with exceptional kindness by the Chiang Mai police and are in the hands of an incredible woman who helped us get out on bail. At this point we are waiting to hear our next step in the process. We want to thank everyone for the donations and for staying positive. Its extremely difficult to make a mistake that becomes so public and to then read some of the opinions about it. We love Thailand and the culture here and appreciate our friends and family so much for their compassion and support. We will hopefully know more soon!"

The story on the GoFundMe page explains that the duo simply found the American money in a bag on the street in the northern city of Chiang Mai, so they attempted to change it for Thai baht, thinking they were lucky.
There's a moral here somewhere. :dm:
