Occheuteal development is halted by the highest authority

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

A bizarre development, nobody was expecting this

Apart from knocking everything in the enclosed area down, anybody know what actual work was done in the last 2 months on the site ?

My take is that someone most likely Chinese, pissed off the PM so thats why he ordered a halt to the construction. That and the emergence of Hainan Island as a tourism hub within China could be a factor too. But my question is, what now? Are they really going to give back the land to the original tenants?

Hainan Island as another gambling area within China may be giving Chinese developers cold feet about setting up at Sihanoukville. Wonder what the Chinese around town are thinking as what they thought was an easy takeover of Sihanoukville seems to have hit a snag. Lesson for them may be that in the end the Khmer have the final say.

Would be great to see a Khmer company develop the site.

Just went down to see the area. The construction workers huts all still up on far left. Guess they will be dismantled at a slower pace than the removal of the blue fence.

Every Khmer l saw looking at the site this morning had a big smile and all saying "good"!!!

Maybe they'll now put the surplus fence round Utopia and Ernies Burgers/stevie C's.

Will they be sending the labourers back to jail in China now they not needed then?
