Construction site murderers sentenced to 14 years
Murderers get 14 years in prison
2 March 2018
Two former construction workers were yesterday sentenced to 14 years each in prison for brutally murdering a colleague in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district last year.
The murder took place the night of March 31, 2017 at a construction site located in Kakab commune’s Chamkar Au Loeuk village.
Say Sarun, presiding judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said Chea Yorth, 27, and Hea Hoeng, 30, were convicted of intentional murder. They were arrested on April 2 last year.
Keo Veasna, a Kakab commune penal police officer, said that according to a police report, the two convicts and the victim got very drunk together at the construction site on the night of the murder.
He said that while drinking, the two convicts got angry with the victim for disrespecting them and proceeded to beat him dead by striking him on the head multiple times with a piece of discarded wood.
The multiple blows to the victim’s head led to his death and forced the two men responsible to hide their crime, Mr Veasna said.
“After beating and killing the victim, they wrapped his body in blankets and dumped it in a rice field near the construction site,” he said. “They then came back to the construction site and slept, pretending not to know anything.”
Mr Veasna said the body of the victim was found by villagers on the morning of April 1, 2017, in the nearby rice field.
The two accused were arrested the following day in accordance with a complaint from the victim’s wife. Mr Veasna explained that the wife, who was also living on the construction site at the time, told police her husband had been drinking all night with the two men.
