Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Many Khmer l talk to are worried the Chinese may push the market to the outskirts of Sihanoukville.

If this was to happen then the local Khmer may lose grip of the supply chain. Remember Chinese prefer dealing with Chinese!!!

Lets hope the Big Market stays where it is and small time business Khmer continue to share in providing fresh food to the community.
It will probably force a tightening in laws on who can get work permits for certain types of work, and who can own businesses. Similar to Thailand.
Otherwise its open slather for industrious people like the Chinese who cover all aspects of the business except the most menial tasks.

Anyone like to take a guess how many small Khmer business owners and workers have been forced to stop operation or move to allow for the 'Chinese invasion'?

On the positive side some casino work and construction jobs created.

The Khmer land owners also had a good pay day.

For all that there seems to be a lot of gloom about when you talk to the Khmer in street.

Good luck with that. the Chinese always manage to find a way round any restrictions, not because they are Chinese, but because they have a lot of tea money available and political clout from their government. Concern over the Chinese invasion has reached PP, but mainly because all the money is leaving here and going to snooky and no one can sell their nice new condos. prices have tumbled, even rentals are down. Seen lots oif adverts around $30-30k now, even buy one room get one free. Give it a year when all the Chinese have failed to pay rent or maintenance or salries and disappear leaving their Khmer business partner holding the baby. they are awful tenants and employer

Back to the demolition at Occheuteal Beach. It seems that having destroyed the centre of Sihanoukville's central beach, leaving it as an ugly wasteland for the high season, the developers are not ready to proceed with reconstruction.
This article/information is from last week, but it is unlikely that situation has changed since then. However, if anyone has more recent news, please post.

Royal Group plan for Sihanoukville beach cleared of businesses remains a mystery
Cheng Sokhorng | Publication date 14 February 2018 | 07:13 ICT
- More than a month after businesses on a prime stretch of Occheuteal Beach were told to pack up and leave, officials in Preah Sihanouk province are still unaware of local conglomerate Royal Group’s plans for the space.

Evictions on the beach began around Christmas time, as business operators who were renting space near Sihanoukville’s central ferry station were told their contracts would be up and they would have to leave by early January.

Prak Visal, director of the province’s Administration Department, said early last month that the development was a joint venture by Royal Group, headed by powerful tycoon Kith Meng, and an unknown Chinese company. Reached yesterday, Visal said he had just returned from a mission abroad and still did not know any of the project’s details.

Deputy Provincial Governor Kong Vitanak, the provincial spokesman, said yesterday he was not in charge of the coastal development project and declined to comment.

Chhin Seng Nguon, another deputy governor who is in charge of the coastal development project, said the space was “under the management of Kith Meng”, and declined to answer further questions about the plans.
Representatives from Royal Group could not be reached yesterday.

I've wondered that myself as its nearly 2 years ago, since all the newly built bars rebuilt further back from the beach were knocked down again, & that green metal sheeting fence was put up

Haven't been back myself since Jan 2018

Meanwhile, back on Koh Rong...
It seems that the Royal group has found the capital it needed in order to move on to the next stage of Koh Rong's development as a world-class tourist destination.

December 30, 2019
Royal Group announces $300 million Koh Rong investment project

The Royal Group, one of the largest investment companies in Cambodia, has announced a $285 million investment project in Preah Sihanouk, intending to making Koh Rong into a world-class resort.

The announcement was made at an event of Koh Rong Royal Silver Beach Recreation Area Project Launch Conference on Dec 28 at Preah Sihanouk province, according to CNC television station, a Royal Group subsidiary firm.

The investment project is a joint venture between Royal Group and Chinese-owned Royal Galaxy Group to build a resort located on Koh Rong Island, 25 kilometres offshore from Preah Sihanouk mainland province.

The joint venture investment is to build a five-star hotel, international conventional centre, resorts, duty-free shops, supermarkets and 600 units of a villa-style resort.

Royal Group president Kith Meng said the new investment decision was made after the Royal Group put into operation its five-star hotel, The Royal Sand Koh Rong, which was launched in April 2019.

“In its next step, the company will continue to build international class hotels and restaurants as well as casinos to develop Koh Rong island become a model island for Cambodia,” Meng was quoted as saying.

The Royal Group was granted in 2008 a concessional contract by the Cambodian government to develop the island.

Under the concessional contract, Mr Meng said the company also was granted approval to build an airport and solar energy station on the island.
