Admiral warns US must prepare for possibility of war with China
Harry Harris says China’s military might could soon rival US power ‘across almost every domain’, and warned of possibility of war.
The navy admiral nominated to be the next US ambassador to Australia has told Congress America must prepare for the possibility of war with China, and said it would rely on Australia to help uphold the international rules-based system in the Asia-Pacific.
In an excoriating assessment of China’s increasingly muscular posture in the region, Harry Harris said Beijing’s “intent is crystal clear” to dominate the South China Sea and that its military might could soon rival American power “across almost every domain”.
Harris, soon to retire as the head of US Pacific Command in Hawaii, told the House armed services committee, the US and its allies should be wary of Beijing’s military expansionism in the region, and condemned China’s foreign influence operations, predatory economic behaviour and coercion of regional neighbours.
“China’s intent is crystal clear. We ignore it at our peril,” he said. “I’m concerned China will now work to undermine the international rules-based order.”

Railways and roads can carry military traffic.
the one belt project will significantly improve China's strategic position.
about the only thing they lack within their own territorry is oil.
i am sure Russia will be happy to supply them, and i think there are pipelines from Iran all the way to China.
you can see why Kazakhstan has assumed such economic importance in recent times by this map

The same rules you broke to invade Iraq et al, assassinate leaders, manipulate elections and markets on countless occasions?
Absolutely laughable.
China doesn't need a war to destroy Murika, Murika is doing a pretty good job on their own. China has the financial power to get what they want without a war, and many countries are tired of Murika and NATO, even some western countries and former allies.
I guess China will be the next interferer in the forthcoming US election.
@flb: nice map. Lots of oil in South China Sea...

USA lacks lanthanides like neodymium and other rare elements like lithium that are pretty much a requirement for efficient alternative energy production. neodymium in an unmanufactured state is trade embargoed for export from china for a few years now.
China has lots, Afghanistan has lots.
one party capitalist states have a clear advantage over democracies in realpolitik.

no, they lack rare-earth mines, because of the environmental cost.
