In 2018, why (not) choose to expatriate in Cambodia?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

In truth the biggest reason to move to Cambodia is that there are no MacDonalds. When they arrive the whole country will go downhill

KFC and Burger king but that is small beer. I did hear a story years ago that macDonald wanted to come here but they said Cambodian beef wasn't good enough so they wanted to import it and the gov didn't agree and told them to FO.

I thought it was that they were required to get in bed with a local, eg "Mr Rough Stuff", and decided against forming Burger Royale.

?? :please:
there are none in Myanmar or Laos either...
The biggest reason ( pre visa crack down) to move to Cambodia was cause it was easy to stay...PLUS easy to get a job teaching english...
Now?? not so sure

I think you have a lot of valid points OP, and I think most expats here are really worried right now. Especially the fact a few years ago we could live here for years on end and no one bothered us, and now the Cambodians have started to increasingly come down on foreigners staying long term. If it stops here it's still not so bad, but if this process goes further a lot of us will be ditching our "investments" here and going to places that welcome us more.
I know Thailand well and if you have money you can do things like Phuketrichard says, but for expats on a tight budget Thailand is far worse.
One thing in particular as another poster mentioned is that a lot of Thais really don't like foreigners. They purposely do not speak English even the 20 words it would take to just show some respect, they purposely disrespect us. Other thais are nice and respectful, but still Cambodians are far nicer and more respectful.
You think Thailand is better, it means you probably don't know it well enough.
Thailand sucks in so many ways, it's hard to count.
I'll just mention a few: harassment of expats is far far worse than Cambodia.
Their visa rules are far far worse for most people - not including the rich who can buy their way out of this with the Elite Visa- which btw is a huge rip off.
They don't like us, they don't want us there. I constantly had this feeling in Thailand, whereas in Cambodia I never felt this.
Thai moral values are basically garbage, Cambodians have a sleazy side too, but they're much more traditional at the same time, while Thais are pretty much morally confused.
Cambodians are still very exotic and open, whereas in Thailand I see a tendency toward mediocrity in the way they dress and behave.
Add to this, Thais are the most two faced nation on the planet. They ban internet pornography because it's against Thai moral values, yet their country is the biggest brothel on the face of the planet.

Vietnam is much friendlier than Thailand but it's not as open as Cambodia or Thailand.

You asked which nation to look at, I would say none of these. Check out South America.
The food, women, music is so much better there. If that's too far for you, the Philippines has it's own share of problems
but they love us there.
