Do you carry your passport/copy?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. so i guess its a good investment for any US citizen traveling alot.
that's a decent idea. i wonder if you can get one after the fact, just on its own, without having to renew the passport.

Yep, I never have any ID/passport on me while in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia.

The exception would be when I'm traveling domestically and might need it to check in to a hotel/guesthouse. That said, it's rarely needed. Even at places that ask for it, they always let me get settled in and then forget to ask.

Another exception would be when I'm Bangkok and plan to go out clubbing. Some places ask.

All that said, I got asked for my passport recently when trying to book the direct Siem Reap-Bangkok bus they asked for it. Said I didn't have it, and they said "never mind.."

Yeah, had to climb over a gate to sneak in one time.

And supposedly Thailand is now enforcing a rule that says ALL aliens must have either their passport, a copy of their passport, or Thai drinking licence with them at all times...

What amuses me here is carrying around the original owner card for a vehicle - even though you have no idea who that person is - and this somehow shows chain of custody. Surely if you keep that card in the vehicle and it's stolen, the thief can then demonstrate 'ownership'.

Bought a bike the other day and picked up the ownership card - the seller said to me, "don't lose that card, if you lose card, you lose bike".

Because Bodge.
Wait a minute here, Chief, on that huge arid island of yours when you drive a vehicle you don't ever have to show the police any documents? License? Registration? Insurance? Then why would anyone ever get 'em? Hard to believe, mate...so, 12 year-olds can drive in OZ since no ID is required ever?

Also, I carry copies of all my docs in my bike here - including original ownership card...never carry the "real" one obviously...if needed can retrieve that one...
Woopsie. Fuck knows what happened there so apologies if anyone is muddle-quoted above.

What I tried to reply to Dags was the following:

"Aah, Dags, you do make me laugh. You are so British innit, with your quaint aints, and your innits. Oh, and your US spelling of license.
As you would know if you were in fact the chirpy cockney geezer you present yourself as, it's the same in them limey isles and that. You ain't required to carry nuffink; you have 3 days to present your documents down the local rozzer shop if you are stopped without any.

It is also not an offense,(or is that offence?), to give a false name. It is only against the law to give a false address.

Haven't read any further in the thread, but Sikhs don't have to wear a helmet neither, libertarian scum that they are."

:D Tim. They're also 'licensed' to carry hidden 'ceremonial' swords in some countries, which is just plain stupid.

Actually I think they are obliged to carry a small knife, at the least - certainly they are allowed to in Dagenham and the surrounding nation. It makes for some proper whacky dance floor fallings-out at weddings, since they are also very fond of Chivas Regal and cocaine in my experience.

But not sticking a helmet over those turbans. Unforgiveable.
