HE Loves His People Like Children, Goes to Beijing tomorrow for Business

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

without a central dividing barrier those four lanes will end up being four buses wide all heading the same way
As a motorcycle rider, I feel a lot safer riding on roads without a central divider. They all have openings every few hundred meters, and you never see when some moped rider is popping out of them without looking. On roads without a divider, at least you have a good view to plan far ahead.
this is true

highway 6 through SR is chaos with the separate car & bike lanes for the very reason you said along with driving wrong way & cars needing to use the bike lanes for access to homes
I haven't been on that road for years. Are big bikes required to use the bike lane as well?
to be specific the side lanes (2 each side of central 2-lane road so 6 in total) aren't really bike lanes (sorry my bad) its that the central 2-lanes that are signed car only by having no entry for moto signs.
no engine cc/size mentioned but maybe the law specifies otherwise...I haven't looked & just follow other bikes

Fresh News to launch Chinese-language site
13 February 2018
Government mouthpiece Fresh News will launch a Chinese version of its website on Monday, CEO Lim Cheavutha said today. Cheavutha said he expected support from Chinese investors and “Chinese people who want to follow the political situation in Cambodia”.
“We will publish in Chinese because we have seen that in the market in Cambodia, there are many Chinese investors who come to invest in our country,” he said.

Indeed, Chinese investment in Cambodia has steadily increased, and political ties between the two countries have tightened as Prime Minister HE increasingly pivots towards Beijing and away from traditional Western development partners. China has been perhaps the only country to publicly support the ruling party’s crackdown on the opposition, amid near-universal international condemnation.

Fresh News itself played a role in the crackdown, posting unsubstantiated conspiracy theories from pro-government Facebook pages accusing the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party of conspiring with foreign agents to topple the government. The accusations were used as justification for dissolving the party in November.

Pa Nguon Teang, independent media observer, said that the plan might be both economically and politically motivated.

“First, Fresh News may think that there are more Chinese [people and investors] in Cambodia and . . . second, as Fresh News is the Cambodian government’s mouthpiece, it may want to promote the government’s image and relationship to the Chinese government and people.”

He added, however, that “when the Cambodian government moves closer to China, there are increasingly negative impacts on freedoms of press and speech in Cambodia”.

Cheavutha, meanwhile, rejected the notion the site was specifically aimed at advancing the government’s interests, saying he had been planning to create a Chinese version for years.

Sihanoukville in focus
A Chinese official yesterday said that the Chinese government recognises the importance of the seaport in Preah Sihanouk province as an economic hub of cooperation between China and Cambodia.

On the sidelines of a lecture to students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Zhou Hanmin, a standing member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee, said that “Cambodia is an important country located in the ‘21st century maritime Silk Road’, a significant project between the two governments”.

Mr Hanmin said leaders of both nations were optimistic over the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone.

“Currently, the economic contribution rate of the SSEZ’s industrial output value to Sihanoukville has exceeded 50 percent,” Mr Hanmin said. “Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s strongest economic province and Prime Minister HE has dubbed the province as the ‘dragon’s head’ of Cambodia’s economic lifeline.”

According to a statement by the Council for the Development of Cambodia on Tuesday, increasing Chinese investment and capital reflected the confidence and trust of investors in Cambodia.

From 2013 to 2017, China was the biggest investor and biggest resource of investment capital in Cambodia. Chinese investors put $5.3 billion in key sectors of the Cambodian economy, including the banking and industrial sectors as well as infrastructure.

In 2017, Cambodia registered 183 investment projects with $6.3 billion of investment capital which increased 75 percent compared with 2016.

For the first three month of this year, the CDC decided to allow Chinese firms to implement 63 new projects and expand three existing projects with $400 million of capital.

Is there any cash left over for building hospitals or schools? Or training for teachers or health care workers?

Of course there will be. The training will consist of conferences for teachers, and identical ones for health care workers. All will be the same. Some ministry high up will encourage each group to be more professional and to rise and overcome the challenges of being paid less and working more.

And meanwhile more luxury SUVs will hit the streets and more luxury villas will be built.
