Supposedly already happening in a couple of states with traffic cameras, but the onboard cameras are a new Orwellian treat.Digg3r wrote:What is a little 1984 though is the Australian police are currently trialling a new car camera that will automatically check registration details of every car they drive past as well as log the GPS coordinates and timestamp the cars.

Re: Do you carry your passport/copy?
When I was on a 1 year visa elsewhere I used to get a photocopy of the id page of my passport and my visa reduced down to driving licence card size, one on either side and get it laminated. Very handy for every day and potential emergency use.
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.

You'd need to change the photo... and the details...dagenham wrote:Smart move there, Dude Cowboy...I just might steal that one from you...Cowshed Cowboy wrote:When I was on a 1 year visa elsewhere I used to get a photocopy of the id page of my passport and my visa reduced down to driving licence card size, one on either side and get it laminated. Re: Do you carry your passport/copy?
I'm surprised at you Strop-Dude...that bit of info about OZ (while edifying and astonishing to hear that OZ is that "advanced") it totally irrelevant to this discussion..why? Since the coppers have access instantly to all that info anyway why would you carry a hard copy? You still must have them "in reality"...StroppyChops wrote:In my (truck, ambulance, car and motorobike) driving experience, nobody carries registration papers for the vehicle, and you are not required to show them on request - the police can retrieve all of that data on the spot anyway.dagenham wrote:Wait a minute here, Chief, on that huge arid island of yours when you drive a vehicle you don't ever have to show the police any documents? License? Registration? Insurance? Then why would anyone ever get 'em? Hard to believe, mate...StroppyChops wrote:You are not required to show license or registration in Oz, however if you are asked to identify yourself after breaking the law, you can be detained until identification is arranged. What amuses me here is carrying around the original owner card for a vehicle - even though you have no idea who that person is - and this somehow shows chain of custody. Surely if you keep that card in the vehicle and it's stolen, the thief can then demonstrate 'ownership'.
Bought a bike the other day and picked up the ownership card - the seller said to me, "don't lose that card, if you lose card, you lose bike".
Because Bodge.
Also, I carry copies of all my docs in my bike here - including original ownership card...never carry the "real" one obviously...if needed can retrieve that one...
It is normal to carry your driver's license and show it on request, but it is not a legal requirement in most states, and it is not an offence to fail to produce it to a traffic cop. However if you are asked to identify yourself and cannot do so, you can be held pending identification. If you happen to be driving your own vehicle, it is normal for cop to identify you from your plate number and address, date of birth etc. if you don't have your license on you.
Here...on the other hand (and the subject of discussion) if you aint go them docs on you..then maybe you go to the police station for some hours/days before it's sorted...that's why I got moto insurance (very very cheap here for accident/injury and theft) because they will come and help sort it out when there's a crash...
Peeps here who don't plan for accidents here are...well, they're stupid...

Driving licences in Australia are issued by each state or territory's licencing authority. All Australian driving licences are valid throughout the country. By law they must always be carried when driving.StroppyChops wrote:You are not required to show license or registration in Oz, however if you are asked to identify yourself after breaking the law, you can be detained until identification is arranged. Licence types, classes and conditions
You must carry your licence with you when you are driving and show it to a police officer if asked. However, if you hold an open licence and are driving a car or riding a motorcycle, you may be given 48 hours to present your licence at a police station.

Tasmania
The law states that when you are driving or in charge of a vehicle on a public street you must carry your driver licence and produce it for inspection by a police officer or transport inspector when requested to do so by the officer. The law also applies to drivers, including parents and friends who are teaching or supervising a person learning to drive.

Re: Do you carry your passport/copy?
^ Much of the law in Australia is covered by a chestnut phrase, "as far as is practicable" - which means 'fair go, mate, gissasec and I'll find it orright cobber?' In practice, most states allow you to present your license within 24 or 48 hours if you're not carrying it - but the officer normally confirms your identity on the spot using the database.

I have a credit card sized laminated copy of my PP bio page and I.C.E contact details on the other side...do I always carry it with me? No, but I should.

Re: Do you carry your passport/copy?
I have an ICE app on my Android phone that works from the lock screen - has multiple languages, and will even dial my nominated numbers directly, so, Mrs Stroppy and the Embassy. Contains health and medical information, insurance information, and so on. The shell is multilingual with about 20 languages to choose from - so a Good Samaritan can pick up my phone (assuming it hasn't gone under a Lexus or been stolen), see the international ICE symbol, click it, choose their language (not including Khmer yet, unfortunately) and direct dial the appropriate person or party, without accessing anything else on my encrypted phone. I do need the equivalent data on a wallet card.
