US NGO eye care mission for Cambodians

Eye Associates team provides eye care in Cambodia
9 February 2018
Karl A. Holzinger MD, Nurse Mayra Custodio and Technician Crystal Christiansen of Eye Associates in South Jersey recently returned from Phnom Penh Cambodia, where they worked in the Children’s Surgical Center and completed about 400 examinations and many surgeries.

When asked why missionary trips are important to him, Dr. Holzinger said, “The people we treat on these trips would never in their lifetimes have any access to an ophthalmologist. As people age, they just expect to go blind. The fact that we are able to give sight to these patients is the most rewarding thing I could ever do as an ophthalmologist. The surgeries are completely free for these patients through CSC.”

Dr. Holzinger has been helping those less fortunate in Cambodia for years, but for Custodio and Christiansen, it was their first time. “I remember the stories Dr. Holzinger brought back from his mission trip last year and being amazed at the positive impact the volunteers at CSC were having on Cambodia,” said Christiansen. “It is so heartwarming to see the advanced technology and eye care in the United States being brought to a location in need like Cambodia.
