Re: Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand
No, I'm that most frustrating of things, an everyday Christian. Not a Sunday Christian, not a just when it suits me Christian, but every day, all the time. Even when I'm getting it wrong (had my first case of shouty angry in the street this morning), or having a beer, or exhibiting my situational Tourettes. And you?dagenham wrote:So...you're a lapsed Jew? A shadow Christian? A part-time Muslim? A weekend Hindu?

An Awkward Agnostic. I strongly believe that there is highly likely a higher power than man because:StroppyChops wrote:No, I'm that most frustrating of things, an everyday Christian. a) Man, as a species, is far too stupid, simple-minded and ignorant to be the "top dog" on planet earth.
b) Man, as a species, is far too stupid, simple-minded and ignorant to be able to communicate directly with that entity so much more advanced than him.
c) All the religions are equal in plausibility. Different gods, ghosts, holy spirits, ceremonies, parables, traditions, histories, etc. but all function mainly to assuage man's anxiety about the unknown. All demand a high degree of irrational blind faith which I personally eschew.
I prefer to focus on all-inclusive pan-cultural Humanism...being a human myself...

You might need to review your understanding of what it means to be agnostic there, dagenham

I was reading that definition a few minutes ago, too. It doesn't align with your last post as neatly as you think it does.

Well there's me. Teetotal because I don't like the taste of any alcohol and can't see the point of it. It's just a crutch, same as religion.dagenham wrote:Are you kidding? There probably isn't one person on this here forum who doesn't have at least 1 drink a day (and, of course, many have more). I personally don't know of anyone who doesn't drink daily and gets drunk at least once a week (if not more times).UKJ wrote:The $4 bar crawl was in Snooky!dagenham wrote:
Most everyone here in PP drinks everyday.
I think your default thought pattern assumes everyone drinks everyday, as you seem to have a bit of an obsession about drinkers. There was reason for you to think it about the $4 guys , so you may just think that about PP expats. I doubt most drink every day.
Why is it so hard to believe there are people who are not dedicated drinkers or that only the seriously religious don't drink to excess. Maybe SC is right about you moving in too small a circle. Possibly your retort would be "people who don't drink (much) are boring, who'd want to know or mix with them?". You won't know unless you try.dagenham wrote:Wait a minute here...how can anything at all in your life be "unrelated to your faith?" I'm not judging here - I'm simply looking around. You think PP is a church missionary training center? Or? These people largely function (to varying degrees) with jobs, families, responsibilities, etc. - I'm not necessarily talking about the layabouts at GSM.
In this climate I much prefer iced tea, Khmer iced coffee, or a soft drink. I also prefer a clear head in the tropics. In six weeks I've had two shots of Chivas and a Gordon's G&T. I'm also happy to admit to preferring Shandy's on hot days.
I have friends here that are teetotal, and others that start their nightly crawl in the early afternoon.
Is it possible you move in fairly small circles?
I demur here that, of course, I exaggerated but short of "serious religious" people (i.e. people who actually try to live the life outlined in the scriptures - whatever the faith) people here drink to excess. Obviously it depends on who your immediate cohort is - anecdotally that is all any of us know.
I personally rarely go to bars, but a very high percentage of people I meet here are serious dedicated drinkers. They are not the minority as phuketrichard claims (maybe he's a missionary?) and hardly anyone drinks in Phuket either - perish the thought! C'mon...now...really...
As for living cheaply, yes it's possible, especially if you don't drink (much).

Dag seems to have an internet crush on Stroppy. If Stroppy really looks like his avatar and meeting Dag in person saying "Sup brah, I am Stroppy," Dag probably pick up his flip flops and dash off faster than the Sonic and Hedgehog.

I was hoping to have a drink with dagenham at The Garage and/or Angry Birds at theGeneral's farewell drinks the other night, but if he was there, he was hiding. That's a recent photo of me, but I'm happily married to Mrs Stroppy so it's just drinks in SR, okay FC?flying chicken wrote:Dag seems to have an internet crush on Stroppy.
