3 Dutchmen arrested for filming with drone in restricted area, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

These kids will be fine. They don't have form like dickhead Ricketson. Their Embassy will sort this out I think. Cambodian government does not want to look too draconian, will affect western relations. That's my guess, let's see...

I guess there's a "no drone" local law. Back in 2015 two Westerners were detained and then released later in the day for flying a drone near the Prime Minister's house. They signed an agreement saying they wouldn't do it again.

In November 2015, a Chinese tourist was arrested and released for flying a drone near the palace. He also had to sign an agreement not to do it again.

Later the same month, three Vietnamese tourists were treated similarly when caught flying a drone near the palace.

In March 2017, a Taiwanese tourist was "educated and released" for flying a drone near the palace.

So the precedent here seems to be catch and release, at least for non-spies caught flying drones in sensitive areas. I don't know what kind of media these guys are involved with but that may work against them.

I wonder if the same rule would apply if you flew a drone without camera function?

Social influencers? LMAO

(edit: actually that's more than enough reason to lock em up, in hindsight)
