Phnom Penh's Vattanac Tower - symbol of hubris ?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The hotel was supposed to open middle of last year, then middle of this year... but even when it does it will probably have as many customers as the luxury goods mall at the bottom.

There are often lights on on various floors so I guess work is proceeding. They had the big LED screen/sign on the side lit up one night, but that's the only time I've seen it on. I thought that might be a hint that the hotel was close, but that was months ago now and it's never been switched on again.

Nobody seems to know.
I realize this thread is two and a half years old, but I saw the window cleaners at work there around Christmas times. If my memory doesn't fail me completely, they used a platform and crane from the top, just as you'd expect.

Edit: just saw Duncan's pictures, and I believe they used that method even on the main building

Yes saw the cleaners at work on the riverside of the building a while back.
Also they have a almost completed the underground car park opposite between street 106 and 108.

There has now been a wall built around Freedom Park and work on the next step for underground car parking will start soon.

As they were observed taking core samples all the way to the Night Market they intend to convert all to underground parking.

Personally I think if the drainage systems fail it will be just a series of large swimming pools.

Ah so that's what they were up to at the Peace Park. I thought they were drilling for oil :D

Didn't they make their initial money on import-export, Coca-cola at one time, if I remember, I could be wrong? Certainly "crony capitalists" in any case.
Next door... the Exchange Square building? That looks like an office block from the 70s or 80s. I didn't care for the Vattanac Capital tower to begin with but it's grown on me. I have a nice view of it from my place.

Ah, well it's ok compared to Exchange Square... although I was disappointed it doesn't have a revolving restaurant at the top. It looks like it does.
