Re: Mass faintings ; Kampot kids collapse in school
Some interesting theories here about possible psychological reasons for mass fainting outbreaks, in this particular case and in general, and how this is interpreted in Khmer spirit beliefs. The two are not incompatible.

It's a curious phenomenon. When I first heard about it happening in factories I just assumed it was caused by something environmental like overheating or fumes or something, but not when it's happening at schools. Well they could still overheat but they seem to have eliminated that as a possibility. Very strange.

Re: Mass faintings ; Kampot kids collapse in school
The same happened here last week, about 40 students fainted in the local high school. The 'competent authorities' said is was caused by lack of oxygen, even though the the school is a typical Khmer designed school where both door and windows are always open unless there's strong rain. It cost the school director a small fortune to have the monks come in and 'chase the ghosts away'. Poor fellow....
Well... Poor.... At least that week he had a decent way to spend the money he makes on the motorbike parking.

Mass psychogenic illness, more colloquially called mass hysteria, hysteria being the clue that it is almost entirely women.

I guess at some time in the past this was a useful trait for monkeys.

Another group of students fainted in a high school in Pursat province on 25 January.
26 January 2018
PURSAT - More than 10 students at Bak Chenhchean senior high school in Pursat province’s Phnom Kravanh district fainted yesterday.
Major Tann Kearith, district police chief, said the students fainted at about 9am and were sent to the provincial referral hospital following the incident.
The school’s director, Sum Pharith, said a total of 13 students from two different 11th grade classes fainted without reason, while they were sitting together inside their classrooms.
“A few students fainted first, frightening and causing other students to also faint,” Mr Pharith said, adding that the reasons for the incident are not yet confirmed.
“We don’t know the main reason yet,” he said. “But I think the fainting could be caused by over-studying and lack of food.”
He recalled that in early November, a number of his students also fainted due to over-working and possible malnutrition. Among the 13 who fainted yesterday, eight of them also fainted in November. “I am so worried about their health. Most of them are outstanding students at my school,” Mr Pharith said.
