Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Shah Alam Perwani Builds Wakaf Wells In Cambodia

Last update: 15/01/2018

SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- The Shah Alam chapter of the 1Malaysia Women Association (Perwani) Community is building 54 'wakaf' (Islamic endowment) wells in five provinces in Cambodia in its bid to help poor people in the country to have access to clean water.

Its chairman, Radziah Ahmad, who is also project coordinator, said the construction of the wells, funded by 160 individuals, could benefit over 100 families for seven years.

"The construction is being implemented in stages beginning in the middle of last month, and is expected to be fully completed in April. It (the project) is approved by the Cambodia Mufti Office and the level of hygiene of its water source has also been tested.

"Although there are wells in these five provinces, the number is still inadequate to cater to their daily needs. (In fact,) they are still transporting water from rivers," he told a press conference here today.

Radziah said they would also organise a Quran recital ceremony in selected provinces after the construction is completed to mark gratitude for the success of the project.....

Hope they don't turn out like the ones water aid built in Africa. Trouble with water is it is not unlimited. If you build a well in one place then that waster does not flow to the next. What happens then in village a's well taked the ewater that used to go to village b's well and village b understandably gets pissed off and attacks village a. Side effect b was that all this water meant they could have more livestock and the population gre. 5 years later there is a new water shortage in the village caused by population growth and more livestock. I hope this project is properly planned and involves engineers and water table experts.
